Background buzzing noise from external speaker
G'day Fellas,
I bought my GPX-4000 second hand, and it came with an external speaker with built-in amplifier (an all in one unit). The sticker on it is very faded but I think it says Coiltek on it.
I don't know if this is normal because it's always done it, but there is a high pitched background humming noise that emits from the speaker. It's not very loud but it's annoying.
The noise only starts when I switch the detector on. If I turn just the speaker on by itself, there is no noise at all, but as soon as I switch the detector on you can hear the high pitch background noise.
Once the detector fires up, I just turn the volume up on the speaker and that generally drowns out the background buzz noise. The buzzing noise doesn't increase in volume as I turn the speaker up, so if I turn it up a fair bit I can get the normal detector threshold noise to drown out the buzzing/hitch pitched sound, well mostly.
Anyone seen this before? All my connections are nice and tight.
I am thinking of buying a new speaker with built-in amp because I suspect that is the problem, but Its $150 so I don't want to buy if its not likely to get rid of that background noise.
Here is a video of what I mean, you will see at the end of the video from 0:25 to 0:29 when I turn the volume right down on the speaker, thats the high pitch backgound noise im talking about. It's always there but I just drown it out by turning up the volume.
Was looking to buy this one to replace it, do you think that would get rid of that noise: https://www.minersdensa.com.au/xcart-shipping/External-Speaker-Booster-GPX4000.html

Hi Brad
Do you have the detector volume flat out, this could cause such a problem. Also can you hear it with headphones as then you would know it was the detector.

Re: Background buzzing noise from external speaker
Thanks guys
The noise is there no matter what volume the detector is set too, even when its down as low as it can go.
Also yes I have tried it with headphones using the headphone socket (well not headphones, but with an audio cable connected to the headphone socket of the GPX, and then plugged into my computer) and the noise isn't there then. But keep in mind that my speaker doesn't use the headphone socket, its an inline speaker so it connects between the battery and the power cord.

Re: Background buzzing noise from external speaker
Id open it up and look for a terracotta colored capacitor...about 0.01/0.1 from memory ..cant remember, and make sure one of its legs has not come unsoldered.
Used for filtering out that noise in many boosters.
Iv had to add them to many of my homemade boosters for that exact problem.
Maybe one of the more tech inclined can describe the actual function aand where to add it.???
I doubt its the detector.

Damn I snapped the cover opening it up
Bit too much force.
So I am ordering a new one by the looks of it

Also I found that terracotta capacitor, it looks ok, both legs were still soldered on

Re: Background buzzing noise from external speaker
mine does that too. It doesn't make a difference to the performance so I just ignore it.
