Mountain Hut is between Avoca and Ampitheatre in Victoria, approximately 1 hour north of Ballarat. The map for the area is on Stone's maps of Avoca.

It is a large area which has been heavily detected and most Prospecting Clubs have regular camps there. Last time I was there, I person found a 13 grammer but most gold found is around the 1 grammer or less.

The gold was formed on a reef which goes several kilometers on the west side and has been worked down to the stream which is subject to a lot of bark and debris so can be difficult to detect. There are a few streams which flow into the main stream and these have brought gold in via the hills.

Gold can be found over a large area and being in the hills is a pleasant place to visit.
