TRIED VICTORIA, DID NOT WORK, NOW HEADING WEST TO KALGOOLIE AREA
Hi All
Live in Adelaide and spent 10 days in central Victoria (Dunnolly, Wedderburn, Kingower areas) looking over old mining areas using a Minelab X-Terra (2nd hand)with a coiltech elliptcal coil (brand new) along with my old man who used a mates 20 year old garret 1100? detector.
We found BUGGER ALL...nearly 2 weeks of walking, walking, walking a bit of digging, then a day panning in a river, then more deays of walking walking walking...to go home empty handed.
We are now planning a trip to WA, heading along part of the old train track checking some of the ghost towns using my relic coil, then to Kalgoolie. Then....well, we are not sure. We have about 6 days we can spend in the area, but would anybody like to throw me a bone?
All we are hoping for is enough earn to pay for the trip (and a little icing) say for the 6 days there a mere ounce or 2 would be fine.

Take your SPF 3000+ Is gonna be hot there this time of year.. And a few million litres of water wont go astray.
Seriously though ask a local if its worth going there until April/ May/ next year...

Going in April next year (Easter time). We are cockies originally so we know about hot/flies/water needs. We will be taking a few spare heater hoses and clamps, fan belts, etc, etc with us.
Just need to know where the best places are to look and to law down the swags.

What detectors are you taking with you on your trip to WA next year?

Sorry to put any dampers on you, Gold is only where you may walk over it and then you still need right principles and gear to find it. If you are going to west and expect to find gold to pay for your trip and have some icing as well I think you may be going for the wrong reasons. If you are going because you want to enjoy countryside and serenity and maybe you might find a bit if colour then that is a diferent matter.
Good luck in your endevours.

I have a minelab X-Terra 70 with a coiltech coil. Last time the old manu used a 20 year old Garrett 1100, but we are thinking this time to hire/buy something really good like a eureka gold or GPX series. I am open to suggestions though...

Re: TRIED VICTORIA, DID NOT WORK, NOW HEADING WEST TO KALGOOLIE AREA
If you are serious about finding gold and enough gold to cover the cost of your trip, then i would be looking at nothing less than a gpx series detector.
Sure the other detectors might find some gold but the chances with those types of detectors are very slim.
To hire detectors then the amount of gold that you must find has just increased to cover that extra cost.
Have a look at the gold that is being found in vic by the members, it is mostly small, they know the areas and they are all running gp series or gpx series detectors.
I don't mean to be disrespectful in any way but one of the reasons that you probably didn't find gold in Vic is because of the technology that you were swinging. There recently were some overseas guys on this forum that spent 7 weeks or so in WA, they got about an ounce, no-where near covered costs.
As mentioned already, I think that 90% of the prospectors within this forum will tell you that they go out to find gold but most importantly to enjoy the bush and what it has to offer. The gold is just a bonus.
I for one have walked sometimes for days to find only a .2 or a .5 which is no where near covering costs for the trip, but that is not why I go out.
As soon as you have a hobby and expect it to cover costs, it is not a hobby anymore. If that were the case I would give up my hobby of detecting right this minute and go back to my other hobbies. Which one of them is woodturning, sure I can sell the occassional piece i make, but it doesn't make me any money. To do that just with labour alone, no-one would pay for any items what I would need to re-coup.
Having said all of that, if and when I get to WA next year I am hoping to recover about 3 ounces of gold in 6-8 weeks. I may only come home with 1/2 ounce of gold too and in that time I would be able to get that in Vic, but then I wouldn't get the experience of detecting WA either.
Cheers

Ok: Here's what I am thinking.
1. Trade up my X-Terrra 70 to a GPX series and get 2 coils
2. Make sure if we find something we chain the area and work it properly
3. Try and stumble across someone who knows the area and can give half a clue
4. Persist more than last time
5. Do less sightseeing (unlike what we did in Victoria)
6. Less beers of an evening (go to bed at sunset, wake up an our before sunrise)

yep sounds like a plan
Sounds like sucess in prospecting is something like this:
30% experience/education
30% right equipment
30% using 'heavy' equipment eg dry blower/motorise sluice/earthmoving
10% getting a good tip
Honestly, not directly looking for that big 100oz thing that is hiding somewhere, but 100 little specs of gold totalling an ounce or 2 over the 10 days or so we are there would be just nice...
ps. if we stumble across a 100oz nugget i will be quiet chuffed....

Re: TRIED VICTORIA, DID NOT WORK, NOW HEADING WEST TO KALGOOLIE AREA
Don't forget the fact that the majority of land over in W.A is under lease.
With out having permission or a section 20A a few things could happen.
Best Outcome
1.) You aren't discovered.
2.) You are discovered but the person allows you to stay.
Not so good outcome
3.) You are discovered with no permission and asked to move on.
4.) Gold police find you, strip you of gold and equipment.(Fines may apply)
5.) You get into an altercation with a very unhappy lease holder, someone ends up going to hospital (Has happened before)
Local pub would be the go, shouting an old timer might lead you to some good gold.
I wish you all the very best out there, make sure you stay save, it's a very unforgiving country out here and sometimes with unforgiving people.
