PUMPS!

Pumps, when you look at the specks the SUCTION HEAD TOTAL LIFT will tell you how far the pump will lift the water {from pump to water supply}. TOTAL HEAD LIFT this figure is based on the maximum head lift. {from pump to the unit you are working}. TYPE SELF-PRIMING Remember their are two types of pumps self priming and non self priming, on the SELF priming pumps a foot valve is NOT required but on a NON self priming pump it IS. LITRES PER MINUTE this let’s you know just how much water your pump will push at total head lift. PRIMING TIME this is very important to know on self priming pumps. FUEL TANK CAPACITY this will give you guidance on how much fuel you will need to take on a trip. OIL ALERT this will kill your motor if there is not enough oil in the sump. DRIVE UNIT TYPE this will give you guidance if you need to replace seal there are different types used. And WEIGHT which is very important if you will be carrying the unit by hand.

Bilge pumps have their place in prospecting but are very limited in their use! The cheap Chinese pumps are ok for occasional use but are very unreliable if used for extended periods of time {weeks at a time}. Also the metal casting on the pumps and motors is very poor and great care must be taken not to bump the pump.

If you are buying a brand name pump ask for a flow chart this will give you all the information on the performance of the pump at any given distance.

Water Delivery Flow Velocities

Required flow velocities in water transport systems - on the delivery side of the pump. Friction loss and much more just follow the links on the site below.
