gpx 4000 nugget finder 12" advantage with litz wire
Hi guys Im new here, I have had an interest in prospecting since I was a yougen. I mainley found gold through panning. Now I have purchased a gpx 4000 and it came with the dd coil and i purchased the nugget finder 12" advantage coil brand new. When out on a detecting tour the other day using the nugget finder coil I got lots of false readings. Every time I moved it across the ground or placing it down on the ground i would get false target sound. I had the machine on these settings
vol 40
auto tone 50
signal peak 18
track speed slow
gp type general
sesitivity smooth
iron reject off
audio normal
gain 10-12 mainly 10
motion slow
response inverted
and tried normal
I tried everything to ground balance, it wouldnt fully take the sound out. i auto tuned twice still didnt help.
Do you think the coil is no good or should i get my machine checked?

welcom to the forum mate, the 4000 is a great detector but does take a bit to work out what does what, it took me a few months to get my head around it all.
these are the settings i use for the 4000 i have on video
https://golddetecting.forumotion.net/t4883-gpx-4000-settings-i-use
the only thing i have changed on this video is the threshold i have the line pointing just above the fine tune button.
just make sure all the leads are done up tight on the front cap, back cap and battery as they will give you signals eveytime if they move the detector from side to side. if i'm running the detector on hot ground i'll use the smooth timings and then if still noisy i'll put it into quite. this is when i run the detector in deep on the front cap. if it's still running noisy you might have to turn the gain down a bit. it's very important to have it running smooth as you can.
cheers

Gday Josh,
Your settings are fairly close to the mark mate.
The Nuggetfinder Litz wire coils seem to run very unstable on my 4000 as well.
These coils are very different to the standard Minelab issue coils and are much more sensitive to noisy ground and Hot rocks.
As Fencejumper said,run in:
Search mode: DEEP
Soil timings: SENSITIVE
These settings will work the best for small gold at depth, but may be abit noisy with that coil.
Then if you get onto some nice gold at depth, switch the Soil Timings back to NORMAL
You could also try adjusting the tracking speed up to MEDIUM
If all that fails, trade that coil in on a Coiltek Goldstalker 14 inch Ellipitcal mono.

fencejumper wrote:what was your front cap on..as if your new to the 4000 and was using a dd in normal then put a mono on
and you were still in normal on the front it might give false signals for someone not used to a mono in normal...
hope this makes sense to you
cheers
on the front you will have a switch that say's cancel/normal/sensative
if this switch is in normal you will have full power but it may be hard for someone not used to the machine to use with a mono..very noisey
if you put this switch in sensative then that will turn on the smooth class timmings (smooth in the back screen) this is a very quiet and forgiving setting
you will lose a bit of depth on big targets but it will give you a chance to get used to your machine.
you can then try to get used to normal with a mono later when you become more used what the machines doing..
it's been a few years since i used a 4000 so i'm going on memory of what the front cap names on that switch..
i should also have noted that if you use sensative smooth you should run in FIXED tracking and ground balance often(even if machine sounds quiet)
Hi Yeah sorry bout leaving that out, on the front switch I had it on normal. fixed and mono thanks for all the comments. I will give your suggestions a try.

thanks for your comment and suggestions I will try them. I have sent the coil back to shop to be tested, it was giving a target noise when I put pressure on the bottom plate using my hand.
