How far off of the coast?
Just wondering if there is any given rule about how likely gold is found away from coastlines?
Is there are hard and fast rule that it is generally more inland and not likely to be within several kilometers of the coast or a beach, or is it totally random and possible anywhere?
Of course I am not asking about rare finds, more so the general rule of thumb.
Thanks.

Re: How far off of the coast?
It could be anywhere bro. Distance to the coast these days has no bearing on where the gold was deposited millions of years ago. HOWEVER. All water ends up at the ocean and gold travels with water when there's a flood. The further it has come to get to the coast then the finer it would have been ground up. Many beaches have gold in the black sands that are exposed after a storm. Most reports I've read it has all been mustard gold it was so fine. Nugget wise it all depends on how far it's travelled from where it originated. If the rocks near the coast are those associated with gold then it could be anywhere.

Dicko is correct, no rule....There is documentation of one beach in Vic where gold washes up onto the beach, I'm sure this happens on many beaches around the world.
Think of all the big gold that has been found on land, now think how much big gold is still under the depths of the ocean.......More is known about the moon than the ocean floor.

Re: How far off of the coast?
I remember reading about a large mining company wanting to take out exploration leases just of the south coast of NSW some years back.
As on land the reefs which shed the gold would be just as prolific below the oceans. It is there but just too difficult to get.
There is a quartz vein that I know down the south coast which starts a klm or so inland that I have been able to track with my sounder out to about 2 km before I had trouble picking it up because of the sand covering it.
This particular vein does not contain gold (that I know of) but you can see what I am getting at.
