The 143.731589 number should be the second number ie East number ie E
it is important you put in the correct order and put in all marks' and dots .
Should work or you could look at Google map zoom in and move pointer till it shows
the correct cord at bottom of screen

Hi madmax

For eg: this will locate Laverton WA -28.622388 122.411003.

In the tools / options section you can change between the lat / long and UTM type of coordinate systems if you want to

But you must put in the - sign when using the type of coordinate you have described.

Your right
Google won't accept the 73 as it wont allow above 60 in that position.
I have no idea except the cord is not correct that you have been given.

Hi

DamIt .............in response to my delamer ................... LOL talking to myself .................. seems the Prospect guide booklet I purchased say GPS co-ordinates are some what misleading in the front cover title. The title should of read " Topographical maps Vic POINT USING GRID COORDINATES‏ " not the words "GPS co-ordinates (WSG84)"

One has to purchase additional maps to make the booklet more of a guide to work with the GPS ( GRID COORDINATES‏) reference points listed in it for that specific map used to obtain these so-called GPS co-ordinates.

I was baffled by the so called GSP co-ordinates " GPS 02/62/800 & 58/57/700 " they listed in the guide and after some searching and studying a old street directory it became clear to me what the auther was doing they are actaul grid references of old maps of particulars areas in question in the guide.

I telephone the place i purchased the guide and request to purchase the required topographical Maps for the guide the author used. I was informed these maps are no longer in print. So will attempt to make head/tails of these so called GPS co-ordinates. Will purchase maps of area and hopefully can find the places. I must mention it shouldn't be too difficult to find all the araes as there are track/street/road/highway crude map(s) drawings in the booklet. Once I'm at these location will get proper GSP co-ordinates, Embarassed LOL

Cheers

The map that is no longer in print does it have a name we might have a Digital copy that you can have to work out your location.

G'day 24kt, You are quite right in saying that these are not GPS co-ords, they are in fact UTM's. To find this location in UTM I need to know what zone they are from, the map should state what zone it is taken from, ie. 54H or 55H etc. Without that information the UTM could be from any zone around the world, with that zone information I can then give you the GPS location.

Adrian

If he is in oz it will be Trentham
UTM Aus66
Z55 E-262800.4 N-5857700.1

UTM Aus66
Lat-37.23.8206
Long-144.19.2234

Would still be good to see the old out of print map to show others on how to read them.

Hi Guys , and yes the area is Trentham & Blackwood booklet guide and amongst many other guide booklets prospect/panning for gold I see more so-called GPS co-ordinates which are direct (x.y) cartesian co-ordinates from topographical maps.

I acquired a latest Australian Government Geosciences Australia topographical map of the areas mention in the guide booklet the scale is 1:50,000 instead of 1:25,000 but while in the shop browsing the map I could actually correlate these GPS readings printed in the booklet.

Also Australian Government Geosciences Australia have a " Map Reading Guide " which is a very interesting read. Also demonstrates examples method of converting Lat/long numbers

Yes indeed it would of been nice to see the old maps just for curiosity reasons but tried many other shops on the off chance they had some old stock laying around but seems the gold fever has exhausted their existence. Just will have to keep a eye out on garage sales and talking to other armature/hobbyist gold prospectors on the likely hood they possess any copies of the older maps in question. Easy to have office works photocopy myself a set .

My map reading ability is limited to a street directory's like the Meways and so on but to utilize a compass and hiking around with a map of a area and finding my way back to civilization would really be put to the test. So now I have starting to grasp the concept of map reading in conjunction with a compass because one can see the importance of understanding maps/magnetic compass as there will be a day when my hand garmin GPS eTrex unit will let me down for what ever reason in the bush.
