14x9 advantage coil questions
HI all i have just replaced a 12" round nugget finder coil that died with a 14x9 eliptical advantage coil
And noticed it is prone to false signals when bumped is this normal ? I have a gpx 5000 and i was
running my gain at between 14-16 i found 4 nuggets on well checked ground so thats not an issue,
But the false signals were a suprise any tips or advise would be appreciated.
Cheers

Re: 14x9 advantage coil questions
G'day Harrysheroes
The 14x9 NFA should not be prone to giving off false signals when bumped. Check that your coil lead plug is tightly screwed on to the machine and that your coil lead is reasonably tightly wound along the stem and not left dangling loose anywhere.
Cheers kon61.

GDAY HARRYSHEROES
all jokes aside what kon61 said is good advice allways make sure your connections are tight as!!!!
and if you picked up four on well worked ground get yourself a smaller coil (8'' mono or 10x5''joey)and sniff the rest out
good scratchin

Re: 14x9 advantage coil questions
Thanks Kon 61 and the speciman for the advice. I used the cable clips that came supplied with the coil for the bottom part of the shaft,
The top section was loosely wrapped around the shaft, I will wrap it tightly tomorrow when i head back out, Curious though that the 14x9 would be different to the 12" round as besides the clips on the bottom section the cable is wrapped similair yet the false noise was constant whenever bumped, I will let you know how it goes, Hey speciman if only i had the gps co-ordinates lol

Re: 14x9 advantage coil questions
Even a little bit of slack in the wire between the coil and the shaft will give you false signals on bumps. Its the cable wire moving along the coil.
I found it helps:
To give the cable just enough room so coil can be perpendecular to the shaft, and no more (e.g. 90 degree angle max)
Bring the cable to the top of the shaft, not the bottom. tape tightly in that first place where cable toches the shaft.
Don't wrap the cable around the shaft untill the upper shaft portion. Instead, tape it in straight line along the top of the lower shaft in three places.
You might not get it right the first time, so be prepared to re-tape. However, if it keeps happening then the coil itself will be suspect.
Cheers!

Re: 14x9 advantage coil questions
when is the last time you cleaned between the coil and teh skid plate. possibly, there is some loose material in there that could be exagerating the problem.
i had one of these coils and mine was relatively quiet when bumped.

Re: 14x9 advantage coil questions
Hi goldbait, this is a new coil second time i used it first time found 14 small nuggets all good did get odd false noise but ok
Then yesterday found it was crazy with really strong false signals from the slightest knock when sweeping.
I have used a 12" round advantage coil for about 2 years and it was my favourite coil until it died and i cant understand why this new one would be so prone to noise when knocked?

Re: 14x9 advantage coil questions
Hi all thanks for all advise i recieved , Went out yesterday and with small adjustments found the coil much better, Concentrated on how well cable was wrapped up shaft, Ended up with 4 small nuggets and at least you dont have to throw the small one back ( unlike fishing)
Cheers

Re: 14x9 advantage coil questions
Just an update on this coil problem i had, Contacted Reeds prospecting and ereturned in after only 6 weeks of use,
It was replaced as they said it was touch sensitive,
New coil is as amazing as i had hoped it would be, stable and sensitive to gold as small a 0.1 gram it is now the replacement coil for my dead 12" round nugget finder that i loved
