Can't Find Gold??? Empty Can't Find Gold???

Post  mariner3800 Sat Jan 01, 2011 12:36 pm

Hi All,

I purchased a 4500 back in September, since then I have had approx 10 days out in the bush with the family trying to find that Yellow stuff.

We have been spending most of our time camped at Waanyarra, great little place to stay and heave been out to areas around it, Tamagulla And Dunolly but have not turned up any thing yet. We have clearly done our bit for clean up Australia day as my kids keep telling me and we have removed over 4Kg of junk including musket balls, bullets, nails, pick heads and so on.

My concern is that my kids are starting to loose interest and this is the main reason we took up this hobby so that we can keep the family unit together for a few more years as they both are entering their early teens.

I thought it might be the detector, so 2 days ago on our way back from Waanyarra we called into Coil Tek and had it tested, and all was OK.

I have a Commander 11" DD, Commander 8" Mono and a newley purchased Coil Tek 14" x 9" as of Thursday.

I have also purchased some settings and map info off Ebay and the SATA project.

All of the above with still no Yellow stuff so what I'm chasing, I think is to get back to basics and start fresh with ne advise so I ask any of you out there who can give any advise to put finger to keyboard and start typing. I have more time off soon and are planning to go somewhere and keep putting in the hours.

For what it is worth, I think with what I'm finding I have the detector working OK??????? I think the " Ground Craft " is what I need to learn???

Look forward to any input

Hi mariner3800, welcome to the forum. If you really want to make sure you are doing the right things when out detecting then you need is some good tution. There is one bloke in Bendigo that I went to Greckie from Golden Triangle Tours, give him a call and you will learn some very good basic skills to start you off. It's not cheap but you will learn the skills needed.
Hope this helps.

mariner3800.

You are detecting in an area that has been murdered by detectorists for 40 years.
It sounds like you have the machine running ok so forget the big signals, you will hear them no matter what. Concentrate on the realy quiet ones, also don't ignore a screamer thinking that it is rubbish? I know it is rare but there are still some good nuggs sitting close to the surface that have been ignored by people thinking that the signal is probably junk.

Don't forget to search on the bush tracks and off to the sides. Also nuggs can be found in the grassy gutters on the sides of the roads where they have eroded from the embankments and tumbled into the gutters

Can't Find Gold??? Empty Re: Who can I turn to?

Post  sandy2010 Sat Jan 01, 2011 2:38 pm

We can all relate to your perplexity........the answers you get will be many and varied.....so here is my "two bobs worth":
I was expressing my frustration at not finding the yellow when I was in the right areas with a good detector.......then one chap said to me,"You will find gold when you, your machine and the environment become one"!........and when I did find gold I understood what he meant.
If you have people around you chatting and constantly asking you if you have found gold yet ? it puts pressure on you and reduces your concentration (even though they are well intentioned).
I too had a fifteen year old whom I had to entice away from his computer with the promise that he keep all the gold he found and he would get 20% of whatever I found........his detecting career lasted all of 15 minutes......
I had to drive 60 kms to ring my wife to come and pick him up who in turn had to drive a 1,000 km round trip....he went home with 10gms of of the gold I found( to convert into computer software ).....in the week following I picked up good gold (with a clear mind).
It's a tricky one......Good Luck!

Hi Peter,

I've been interested in prospecting for many years...did a lot of dredging/panning. I even bought a Whites 5000D with my brother. we didn't do any good with the detector but had lots of fun finding gold with our little dredge.

Can't Find Gold??? Dredge10

I drifted away from prospecting to do other things and lots of water passed under the bridge since then. About 18 months ago my wife said lets go to Sovereign Hill for the weekend.

We had a great time and this stirred me to get back into prospecting. I did heaps of research on the Web i.e. Youtube plus forums etc. I though the best thing to do was a weekend with a Gold prospecting mob.

This was the best thing I did.

The company was Gold Prospecting Australia. They offered no guarantees to find gold however they offered me experience - that was priceless...I actually found gold in the first hour or two.. I was rapped bounce bounce bounce bounce

I bought a 4500 and have found gold on just about every trip to the GT

Give Mark and Ronda a ring they will be only happy to help.

Hi Mariner,

You have gotten solid information from the posts above.
I would only add that ten days of prospecting with a detector in pounded areas
is, in the overall scheme of things, not really much time to give yourself to learn the detector.
I have found that the trait most needed with detecting is patience:
with learning your detector and mostly with how you apply yourself moment to moment.

The sound of a signal that means gold
is many times much fainter than you would ever believe.
I needed to really train my ear to be able to pick out the faint deep signals.

Anyway, Happy New Year.
I look forward to hearing about your first find.

Gday Mariner

You have been given some good advice so far, now you have to put it in to practise, getting some one on one tuition is the best way to get you finding gold, its hard to really explain some aspects but when you actually see it done first hand then it will sink in much quicker.

If you continue on the way you are you will eventually find some gold, but I have seen many people give it away before ever finding anything due to not taking advice and just being too expectant, nothing worthwhile is ever going to be free, there are a few things that you can do for yourself to help improve you chances.

Your frame of mind can play a big part in whether you are successful or not, you have to operate with a positive attatitude, and be enjoying what you are doing, take your time, slow down and cover the ground with a positive and slow scanning method, by all means you need to dig ever sound you here until you are satified what is giving the signal, for the most part as previously mentioned most gold signals will be vague and easily missed, so you have to start focusing on these vague responses, and also as mentioned dont let the rest of the family be on your heals while you are detecting, if you want to have a pick bearer, by all means do that but ask them to keep a short distance away and not to engage you in conversation, while you are talikng you are not listening, you have to put your mind in prospecting mode.

Further to this dont try too hard, try more to go with the flow and relax into the swing of the coil and the peace of your surroundings, pick a likely looking spot and instead of rushing over it in five minutes, take your time and poke the coil about under all the branches and bushes, down every hole and along every embankment, the gold does not care where it is, so if you are on gold bearing ground, it can and will be anywhere, it takes time to develope your knowledge of what looks right or at least the most likely spots, anywhere there is workings, from the old timers there is a high likely hood of there being gold still there, downhill from mines, on any type of scrape, or areas that appear to have been surfaced, also any relatively new disturbance to the ground can be a good place to look, new scrapings to the sides of the road in these areas can also produce gold.

Your chances will increase with the amount of time you spend on the ground, but I would definately try detecting on your own to help you learn to get into the right frame of mind and if you can get the tuition it will definately help your cause.

good luck

cheers

hi mariner3800
welcom to the forum. i think everyone has coved everything you need to know, once you get to know your detector like the sounds it makes the settings ect, you will end up tuning your ears into your detector and you will pick the smallest sounds. it takes time to get it but the most important thing is don't think everytime your going to go out you going to find it..... you'll go home "Disappointed. gold is not everywhere. you have to walk over it to find it, it's the luck off the draw. the other is reading the grounds and knowing what your looking for and where the gold could be, once you do a day out with a club or a detector pro from a gold shop you'll be right...anyway i hope everything works out and you hit the yellow soon...
cheers

Hey Mariner.

You sure got a few responses.

Some better than others Smile

here is my 2 cents:

1. Dunolly and surrounding areas is a summer home to some of the best prospectors in the country. You can try your luck there, but i would say that Bendigo & Balarat districts are better for new people.
2. Go on tour with Mark from GPA.
3. Attitude that works for me is "i will find everything that others missed". You should be happy to find bullets, as they should have been found by others. If they missed bullets near digs, they also missed gold.

Cheers!

I won't even try to give you any advice apart from booking some lessons with Mark of Gold Prospecting Australia. Mark is one of the few people in this game that I haven't heard a bad word about from anyone, just lots of praise. And he isn't expensive as some, either. cheers Jim

Can't Find Gold??? Empty THNAK YOU ALL

Post  mariner3800 Thu Jan 06, 2011 8:49 pm

Hi All,

I would like to firstly say a big thank you to all who have posted with such wonderful advise, it really shows the power of this wonderful site is.

I have just returned from a day with Mark & Ronda from GPA and can I say they are two of the most wonderful people you could meet. The professionalism and knowledge of this team truly needs to be experienced.

Where do I start, well after the morning briefing of the area we were going to detect and a run down on detector tuning and settings we set off into the bush for some
1 ON 1 as there are only 2 in our party.

Within 30 seconds Mark had corrected my swing, my distance, my speed and my ground balancing, all bad habits I had picked up over the past 3 months ( a big lesson for getting some professional tuition when you first start and don’t waist 3 months in the bush like I just have??? )

By morning tea we had dug a couple of targets and my rhythm was starting to develop.
The instructions and lesions where starting to sink in and after returning to the spot we had left for morning tea we had only moved about 10 feet and another target was found. After digging a small shot gun pellet out, the hole still had a faint sound in it so I dug a little further to reveal MY FIST PIECE OF GOLD, 0.3 gram nugget, I tell you what a rush, to finally find a piece of GOLD.

The rest of the day for me only produced and more rubbish, but this did not phase me at all as I finally had some yellow in the can. The other newbe Allan, came home with 2 pieces to a total of 0.4g and a very interesting button.

People to thank, firstly a big thank you again to all who posted on my question of help.

To Mr Ararat ( please let Mark know who you are as he cannot put a name to your call sign ) Thank you for your recommendation of GPA and your words of wisdom

To Ronda & Mark, THANK YOU for a wonderful day, you both are truly processional, informative, hard working, and most of all very genuine people who run a fantastic operation.

I will see you in March

Peter
