rain and websites for research
like to know how much rain in mm's is needed for the top soil to reode away and that the deeper bigger gold can be found closer to the surface.
Also what maps or websites would you recommend to research areas and it giology there and able to view gold maps on line.

Re: rain and websites for research
Hi Tim
Its not so much how many mm but what your really after is short heavy falls. Most gully's and gold areas are detectable again after flood water moves things around exposing undetected ground where larger targets hide. Some erosion occurs and this is where you can look for missed weak signals mostly small gold or specimen or the occasional deep one.Don't forget that over a period of time this happens as well so you should return to previously detected areas that produced say after 6-12 months.
I use a combination of contour maps, old gold maps, google earth and local knowledge of specific areas to research and this is just to get ideas, the rest is just sighting and good old fashion leg work. Some understanding of the ground depth, inside bends, tributaries and plateaus on slopes etc can help in targeting the spots.Look for loaming holes and shallow sampling from the old timers as they are always close to where you will find it.
Don't be afraid to talk to people you see out there as you are helping each other with ideas.
Good luck

Re: rain and websites for research
thanks there great ideas.
thinking ground changes over time and be that growth trees and certain things can change the alndscape of the land.
i sometimes see random holes here and there and kind of not really near any gully or digs i find these good spots.
i like seeing some rock formations can tell alot about the lay of the land.
always like to know if dams are a good indicator.
what color of the dirt do we look for what color of the dirt holds the gold.
is there anything kind of gives of some feeling that its gold bearing ground or is it pot luck as long as you are in the basic general area.
google earth ill give it try what about geo vic as well are geo vic good.

Re: rain and websites for research
The heavy rainfall will cut away some spots and expose some deeper gold but it also moves a lot of dirt to low levels (were most gold ends up) and covers the gold there with more dirt also.
