Re: China? unknown number
Maybe that's one of the hijacked ones that were later recovered? Must be 15 years ago now, I'd guess. There used to be info about the incident on Minelab's website.

The underside of the detector box, including that of its warranty label, sure looks like an original Minelab GPX 4000 to me.
As long as it works well & does what its supposed to do upon powering up, then I wouldn't be to much worried about where its made.

Here's the story of the theft:
https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/9476636.devices-used-to-identify-gold-nuggets-stolen-from-truck-parked-in-common-road-low-moor/
Those detectors were later recovered and sold, but as the missing serial numbers had been publicised by Minelab, they were relabeled with new serial numbers before sale, so that they couldn't later be mistaken for stolen property. Hence, the weird serial number in the above photos. So, not a fake, nothing to do with China, just a detector that had a bit of an adventure before it reached its first owner.
