A small specimen.
I went out for a detect with Moredeep yesterday. It was a muggy day with the occasional cool breeze coming through. The mozzies sure kept us on our toes but with plenty of Rid and the mosquito net over the hat they weren’t too much of a bother.
It is getting harder to find anything in our usual spot now but I managed to find this small specimen.
I did a specific gravity check on it and it says just over 1 gram of gold inside.
It cleaned up nicely in an acid bath. We had an enjoyable day out.
Regards Axtyr.

Good on you Axtyr, well done
At least you blokes are having a go at it, in between the heavy downpours.
With pools of still water about, the mossies' are & will be a nightmare for weeks to come.

Re: A small specimen.
Thanks Kon.
I am still bewildered as to how much gold is in it. The piece weighs (62.2 grains) 4.02 grams dry and I have tried several ways to work it out and I have anywhere between the approx. 1 gram how I worked it out first, and 10 grams of gold with other formulae. Crazy.
The dry weight is spot on using both my digital and analogue scales.
My first effort on getting the wet weight was to place a film canister with water in it on top of the scales and then tareing it. I then hung the specimen from some cotton and this gave me (16.9 grains) 1.1 grams.
My last effort had me placing a plastic bar across the pan of my digital scales and suspending the specimen in water whilst hanging from the scales. This gave me a readout of (58.5 grains) 3.79 grams.
I really like the idea of my 4 gram piece containing 10 grams of gold. If only all specimens were like this.

Re: A small specimen.
To good looking a specimen to have it crushed, in order to find out the exact amount of gold in it.
Some collectors pay good money for such gold in quartz specimens.

Good looking speci Axtyr, toooo nice to smash but you could try this method I came across on ewetube if you want to remove the quartz?

Re: A small specimen.
Well it got the better of me. I just had to know how much was in it and whether the calculations were correct.
I did 4 different calculations and I got the following results. Keep in mind that the specimen weighed 4.03 grams total.
a) 1.37 grams of gold, I believe.
b) 4.24 grams of gold????
c) -4.2625 grams of gold - How do you end up with a negative number.
d) and finally 1.89 grams of gold.
The gold content of the specimen which still has little bits of quartz attached weighs 1.76 grams. Better than average.
They aren't wrong when they say that it is only an estimate.
So the best way to get the WET weight of a specimen seems to be to have a setup whereby you hang the specimen under the scales and then ring the bowl of water UP to the specimen. It was a lot less accurate placing a bowl of water on the scales and then dipping the specimen into the water and getting the weight.
