Fish Pen Merimbula
Just arrived back home from 7 days detecting the Fish Pen beaches Merimbula.
Reckon I covered every sq cm of beach inc a bit of Boyd town beaches.
Total finds are six sinkers, one ten cent piece, a long lost 2 dollar coin a nice sil ring, a mbl phone ( delivered to the local police station) uncountable fish hooks and bobby pins.
The beaches were otherwise totally devoid of good targets. Oh well i got plenty of exersize and near on destroyed my back and knees.
Used the EQ 600 and the CS4PI. The EQ performed very well but I enjoyed the ease of operation and simplicity of the CS4 and so stayed with it for most of the week. My only gripe about this machine is that it can detect lightning from a bazillion kays away and it is chatty when the coil contacts the damp sand.
Spotted some whales off Pambula and the Fish pen beaches. They were a km or two off shore but the Nikon P 1000 picked them out nicely.
Also this very interesting ship was hugging the horizon but once again, the P1000 nailed it. To the naked eye it appeared as a tiny white dot on the horizon.
Seems to have alot of radio gear hanging off it aye??

Re: Fish Pen Merimbula
Yes the pickings are slim, but I was having a good relaxing time so wasn't too fussed about not finding much.
The beach was sort of slightly illuminated by a flood light high up on the beach. The night was a bit wet and windy but who cares.

With the red hull, it looks like a polar research vessel, but the proliferation of aerials, radomes and what appear to be crane derricks seems incongruous, as such ships usually have clear deck space for helipads. And what's that bulky white structure towards the bow?
I'd guess it's possibly some sort of offshore gas/oilfield service and maintenance vessel, maybe specialised for fire-fighting, if those derricks are in fact water cannons.

Re: Fish Pen Merimbula
I thought it may be a spy vessel of some kind or a Japanese Whaler in disguise but they are usually grey. Have not been able to clear up the writing . A google search may ID it.
Polar research Vessel might be correct although the spider web of aerials is interesting.
Yeah that bulky bit at the stern is curious? May be where they keep their drug or sex trade shipments stored. or dead whales
Google is not helping much but a"Research Vessel" is very likely and yes those arms look like derricks

Re: Fish Pen Merimbula
Well I have searched through approx 1000 research vessel photographs and have not been able to find and ID this particular ship.
Also have not found it on Maritime live shipping maps.
Have asked AMSA to ID the ship for me.....

Re: Fish Pen Merimbula
Well that is a tad odd
As I am not the owner of the vessel I have to go through the freedom Of Information Act in order to obtain the name and purpose of this vessel....If I was the owner I would not be asking the question and the bleeding ship is out there for all the world to see and it has to Dock at some time where buckets of tourists will be able to see it and read the name on the side of the boat.....Sheeesh give me a break!!

Adrian,
I like the way you think.
There's obviously more than one way to skin a cat

Yeah it has been a while since I have found enough 2 dollar coins to get enough petrol to make it back home.
As a matter of interest; I have used the vanquish 440 on these beaches and it is a very good and easy to use tecta. Very sensitive to small gold chain, will not go much deeper than a few inches on some small chains but that is better than not responding at all like most detectors.
Might look like a toy but is far from it, a very capable machine.

No prizes, just seeing if we all think alike.
My first impression was that it looked like a couple of pieces of very horny drift wood.
