Teachers On Strike For More Pay.
Have just been looking at the average pay scales for Aussie Primary and Secondary Teachers.
Primary 89,836, Tafe. 170,000, Uni about the same as Tafe.
So what are they bitching about?? Those salaries are enough for Singles and the Married ones will have a working husband earning a similar or better amount.
Maybe if they tried not living beyond their means would be a good idea.
My daughter is an accountant with a firm for 7 years and she gets 67,000 inc Super before tax. She lives alone in a Sydney apartment (500 bucks a week) and is rapidly going broke.....Oh yeah, just got a 1% pay rise.

Re: Teachers On Strike For More Pay.
If you make $170,000 a year living in Australia, you will be taxed $51,367. That means that your net pay will be $118,633 per year, or $9,886 per month.
If you make $89,836 a year living in Australia, you will be taxed $21,460. That means that your net pay will be $68,376 per year, or $5,698 per month.
If you make $67,000 a year living in Australia, you will be taxed $13,582. That means that your net pay will be $53,418 per year, or $4,452 per month.
It shows how much the Taxman gets

Yep that be right, but when is enough ever enough Adrian? The politicians together with the tax man, have mastered the art of peeling working class humans like bananas, not to mention what polies get as a pension package upon retirement, as compared to the average working class pensioner.
I can only wonder what more inflation & or tax hikes await us in the not so distant future, considering a trillion dollars has now been borrowed/blown.
Hey Adrian, aren't the politicians due for another well deserved 17+% pay rise, cause the last one or two just don't cut it.

And we are surviving on approx 32,000 per year. Lucky we own our home....That ownership did not come easily; we gave up a lot to be able to settle the loan early. No holidays, no club memberships, living on mince pies and spuds and we still managed to pay our daughters school fees. (Just) and to keep her tummy full.
Our bank balance never goes up, only down.
It turns my stomach to here about these teachers and other trades bellyaching about their pay, These people seem to think they should all be able live in luxury no matter what job they do. The poor dears are finding it difficult to go to Bali every year or to take a trip around Australia or maybe the world. Or maybe their speed boat and 4x4 needs some work or maybe they think they should be able to go to the ski slopes every year.
Get a grip people! If you want higher pay then get some higher skills and a job that pays more.
My Niece was a teacher in both Primary and secondary. She quit after around ten years, because they (the teachers) were loosing control over the students and were suffering abuse from the students on a daily basis to the point where she could no longer cope.
She thought the wages were ok

Re: Teachers On Strike For More Pay.
G'Day Kon
We have written a number of reports for SA Dept. of Ed. and one of the recommendations was a pay rise for High School science math's teachers who learnt and then started to teach students how to write HTML5 and CSS3, then we have divided and conquered, primary school teachers are not smart enough to learn the math's required.
More than 10 years ago it was far cheaper to have 2 x SSOs ( Duty or care ) and a teaching computer which could offer individual teaching tailored in real time to all the students per class room than a teacher.
In SA 85% of full time teachers only work 4 days a week due to not wanting to pay tax at the higher rate.
It is obscene that primary schools teachers are paid the same as high school teachers.
I have more than 20 years experience working in schools and approx. 10 in Canberra and politicians on all levels are terrified of teachers, if they go on strike the ATO is not happy ppl staying home and parents don't get a break from the brats. Not a win win
I found it was not the salary it is the "$288 travel allowance / day" which is the scam because this is an expense they should pay out of their hugh salaries, especially considering they are sleeping with their staff.
BTW - My wife is a high school math's science teacher

If the travel is work related then They should be compensated, also a meal allowance is provided up to a certain limit. One has to eat no matter if you are at work or not. We all know that the system is always abused where money is concerned and many shonky claims go in.
In the RAAF we had to have receipts for all travel and meal claims that we submitted.

Re: Teachers On Strike For More Pay.
AU_Toe, I have great respect for our teachers & what they have to go through teaching kids, whether of primary school age or that of high school age, but I am not the one to separate what each teachers entitlements are or should be. They all have their responsibilities of teaching no matter what field of teaching they're in.
Like top class tradesmen are hard to find these days, so are top class & respectable teachers.
All or any working class person should earn far more than what has been set down by government as the minimum award wage & in line with todays inflation/living costs, of which (like Adrian says) many are entitled to, but don't get.
When I say "when is enough money ever enough", I mean even if an average high school teacher were on $200,000 a year, would they all of a sudden reject another $5000 dollar pay rise the following year? Certainly not. Will an average every day pensioner ever reject any pay hike amount annually, no matter how meagre it may seem be, in order to keep up with inflation?
Adrian is right in what he says, to many of our working class citizens, in various fields of work, are living well bellow the poverty line of todays times, in turn creating stressful debt traps of which they have no other way out.

The answers is when you don't have to work anymore and can retire early at a level of life style you are happy with.

Re: Teachers On Strike For More Pay.
I like your way of thinking geof & in reality that's how it should be for all, but not all who have accumulated enough money, shares, or property investments over time, retire early. For what ever their reasons, prefer to work or continue to work on (even though they no longer have to & can make do with what they have) well past retirement age.
Some do it because they simply want to, others because they have to, either way & for what ever each persons reasons, some simply need more in order to continue their way of lifestyle. It all depends on each ones circumstances at the time.
Either way, "when is money ever enough to retire on & live comfortably?", when one is content, living within what they have in their possession & or at their disposal upon retirement & not trying to live a lifestyle above their means, or of what they can't have.
Sounds a bit like what you stated down geof no?
