It was a case of sink or swim? pockets full of gold doesn't help ones buoyancy
And I'm guessing not many new how to swim or even tread water.

Am not so sure about that. Sailing was a very common form of transport back then along with walking and by horse back.
But yes there were no choppers to fly out and pluck you out of the water, no fast rescue ships, no radio contact with anybody , no GPS data to pass your position on to your rescuers, it was sink or swim or be shark food.
If you were lucky there might have been another ship sailing with you which could offer some assistance.

See if you can get your hands on this book..it's a riveting story about the tragedy,and the attempted salvage operation. My brother has the book,and lent it to me..i couldn't put it down
