This might be Worth a Watch?
A new 4 part series coming up on SBS..We need more shows about the old gold mining days.

I'm still waiting on someone making a movie about the Welcome Stranger, and the life of John Deason..would be a great subject for a film.

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
This site was for sale some time back and now has been purchased with the idea of opening it up as a tourist attraction, restaurant, and film site.

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
I think [ ??] some of the buildings came from the defunct Sandhurst town which operated outside of Bendigo as a tourist attraction.
Sandhurst town was along similar lines to the swan hill pioneer museum.
The site now is the Atisha Buddhism centre in myers flat bgo.

I'm with you moredeep, I found it disjointed and hard to follow. Gave up in the end.

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
I managed to get through the second episode and again was left under whelmed.
Attention to detail is a little off, the swapping between English and Chinese is puzzling and the use of modern music in the first episode was a strange addition.
I'll persevere with it.

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
I just finished watching the first 4 episodes. Slow ,but watchable. The show is not really about finding gold ,but ,more a story of murder on the goldfields where the detective is actually the owner of the local newspaper. The answer to the mystery is in the last minute of the last episode . Not sure how far they can take this show. Maybe different stories in each series ,but the first one is finished ,as far as i can see,

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
Here we go again Adrian, your attitude of the Chinese back in those days is rather tasteless.
So the English and Irish didn't have filthy habits either?, they all used a commode or the potty and I'm sure they all washed their hands with pears soap
As to women being pestered, I think you'll find their was probably a lot of inappropriate attention given to women from all sides.
As to the introduction of a drug, the first fleeter's [ English and Irish] introduced grog and tobacco to the natives as well as several diseases.
As to Opium it was a valuable tool in the a doctor's black bag for pain relief as well.
Now back to the movie, I lost interest but will attempt parts 3 and 4 soon .

Not the best series that I have come across, but because its concerns gold/goldfields/Vic GT I liked it and look forward to season 2 next year.

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
I like any movie about the gold rush days . They give an insight into what went on all that time go. My interests are not just about what they found ,but the stories behind the people and their everyday struggles in life. When out swinging the detector at a new spot i stand there and surveil the ground ,the trees ,the land contours ,the mines and anything laying around and try to get a feel for the place and what happened there. All part of the experience when out looking for the yellow stuff to have a vision in my head of the operations that occurred where i am . Watching these films takes you back to another time where a pay cheque wasn`t guaranteed. You really had to work for it.

I watched a few episodes but couldn't get into it. Too political for my taste.
I wrote a book some years back called Xiang And The New Gold Mountain at first I thought they had ripped my book off but I reckon my story tells it more like it was.
If anyone wants to read it and I can email you a copy. It is also included on collection of gold books on my USB stick.

Now back to the main topic gents.

From what you watched , is any of it based on real life stories from the Chinese diggings ?

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
Some of it but stuff like gays? In those days they would have been hung. The Chinese did have government sponsored ' protectors' but the Chinese would never have mixed, or even spoken to a white woman. What makes me laugh was most of what the Chinese we accused of Europeans were even more guilty of than the Chinese. The Chinese had an extremely rich civilization when the poms were still painting themselves blue and living in caves. The Chinese were also mining gold and using hydraulics to do so two thousand years ago. Not to mention turning gold into exquisite jewelry.

Re: This might be Worth a Watch?
Did Australian miners learn anything from Chinese gold mining techniques or adopt any of their ways of extracting it ?
Were the hydraulic sluices a chinese invention ? There are many old mining operations near Ballarat which have plaques and bush walking trails that recognise their contribution to the local area during the gold rush days.
