Skid Plate Empty Skid Plate

Post  Dunks50 Mon Aug 30, 2021 6:19 pm

Hi, I purchased a 12 x 8 NF coil and a skid plate with it. The problem is the skid plate doesn't just slip on or go on at all really. Do I have to tape it on? I read a brand of tape in Bunnings will do the trick. Please advise.

Cheers

Keeping the skid plate on and stopping ingress of dirt has always been problem. Wrapping any tape will help and also give protection on the edges of the coil when hitting sticks and pebbles. A tape of 12 to 19 mm wide will do the job. My favourite is the more expensive self fusing silicon tape. It is thicker stronger and last longer. Most car supply shops like Super Cheap sell it. The method of applying it is to wrap it around the coil 2 to 3 times with a slight stretch, I have found if you use this tape, you only have to do it once compared with most other tapes going ratty and need frequent application.

I use the 12mm or so tape, Wrap 1/2 on the top of the side edge and the other half on the top of the coil after one loop do similar to the bottom side edge and the bottom of the coil, then 2 times flat around the side of the coil. The coil edges seem to bear the most damage and in the past have done 2 or 3 loops around the edges.

Do not use black tape as have been told some black tapes have carbon in it that can affect sensitivity, but its most probably a myth.

Should have said...... I (Do not use black tape as have been told some black tapes have carbon in it that can affect sensitivity, but its most probably a myth)

Have been given white cloth tape from a detecting shop in the past, and its still unused, since I like the top and bottom edge protection of the plastic type tape.
