Re: what do you look for in an area
wow! yellow mellow, big question there mate, bloody difficult question to answer.
I would tally the best 50 answers and crunch them through a super computer, and maybe just maybe you'll get a result.
For me personally, I like looking for the gentle/flattish slopes in the gold fields.
The Bendigo gold expo is coming up soon ,there will be a geologist there who will tell you how to find/look for big gold.[i wish].

Re: what do you look for in an area
It all depends which part of the country you live in yellowmellow.
The area I live in is Castlemaine which was known as the largest alluvial gold fields in the world, gold was/is basically scattered every where.
Reefs run north south, there's plenty of shallow ground/exposed bedrock plus ancient river bed that deposited the yellow stuff far and wide.
I'm still baffled at times to where I find gold, there's no logic to it at times, half the fun is just wandering aimlessly and coming across a bit and yelling ureka!!

I had a great book by Stephan Barnham years ago which I lent and never got back so Im not sure of its name.He has 2 books that you can get on ebay. Gold detecting for novices and Gold detecting for the more serious.I feel it may be the second. If it is the one I had it shows how to read goldfields. Its a very good read with diagrams and will give you stacks of information.
