GPX 4000 Problems Empty GPX 4000 Problems

Has anyone out there had the sound drop out on the gpx 4000?
Mine has done it twice now about 3 or 4 weeks apart. I have a booster fitted and when it first happened all I could hear was a constant tick tick sound (no threshold), and the display was still lit up. I tried different coils and the same thing was happening. Then I took off the booster thinking that could be playing up, but still no sound except no ticking sound (the booster is obviously picking up the ticking sound).
Turned on the machine the next morning and still no sound. Was going to send it to minelab a few days later and thought I would turn it on again and check. Now suddenly its working and hasn't missed a beat since then, until last Sat morning. I was detecting for about an hour then it started ticking again and no sound including the sound you get when scrolling through the menu.
Obviously this is an intermitant fault, so if I send it now to minelab and it doesn't happen what then?
I know in these cases they will take it out and field test until they experience the fault. This would be good but they charge about $70 odd dollars per hour.
By the way I have checked the battery and the power cord and they seem to be ok ?
Has anyone experienced these problems?

send minelab an e-mail with everything you've just described in here. see what they say.

did u buy it new? is it still under warrenty?

i know some manufactures will repair a faulty product if it is still owned by the origional owner and can provide proof of purchase.

Hi Goldbait,
I bought this machine second hand about 2 months ago, so no warranty.

i'd still send them an e-mail. you'll possibly still incurr a small fee to get it fixed, but atleast then it gets an overhawl.

alternatively. get it modified. ....... i'm going to get flamed for saying that. Razz.

Had a couple friends with similar problem, intermintent at first. One unit made the clicking noise even when the detector was off laying on the ground. Sent the machines off to Minelab and it was loose/shorting wires in the control box behind the the power lead plug (one could have been the on/off switch wires) apparently.

Ring Minelab. It should not cost over $90 +your postage, and the control box can be thoroughly checked and optimized (whatever that is).

I reckon it is better then having it go kaput on your next weekend out.

If you are handy you could get into the control box and check out the wires/ribbon and the inside bezel holding the wires to the power cable connector has not worked itself off and is done up tight. But i would send it to Minelab for a full check up with notes on the problem if it was me.

Thanks Guys, I'm at least happy to hear someone else has had the same problem.
I was worried about paying through the nose for something that might not happen when they check it out.
I'm sending of an email to minelab now.
Thanks for the input.

Much appreciated.

I had a similar fault and found that the problem was the socket on the back of the detector the pins were not making the connections properly to the cable
drove me mad for about two weeks
fixed by scraping the pins and the sockets

I sent my 4000 back under warrenty and i was the second owner.
I did help i keep in contact with the original owner but in the end i believe ML are fairly flexiable as long as it hasnt been tappered with or abused.
Do you have the original owner contact details ? if so contact them and explain whats happening im sure most people would be helpful and help you get it done for free under warrenty.
Im assumming it has a 5 year warrenty? if they attended a ML training day or am i losing track of time and its outa the 5 year warrenty period ???. If so disregard the above Smile
