Knee Replacement
Having a left knee replacement next week and the right knee early next year. So looks like I won't be detecting for a while.
Actually it is my crappy knees that have stopped me tecting seriously for around two years now. Hopefully these ops will enable me to get back into it. But in the mean time I will be doing more of

Re: Knee Replacement
Good luck! I got hit by a car just a few years ago and my knees have been a problem ever since. It was a hit-and-run by a hotrod in a carpark as I was putting my camera bag in the trunk of my parked car. Threw me into the air too... and I couldn't even get out of bed for almost a week. Now I have trouble walking up and down hill without considerable pain. I jumped down from a small rock earlier this year while detecting in the goldfields and I'm now in pain again. I don't think it ever healed properly. But I know how much it impacts detecting now. Hopefully you'll get some great results when you've healed up. All the best!

Re: Knee Replacement
Thanks for all of the encouragement mates
Today After two years I finally got my GP to prescribe some real pain relief other than Bloody panadol Osteo. That stuff is about as useless as sucking on jelly beans.
Now with a bit of luck I will get more than three hours sleep tonight. Yah bloody Hoo!

Hope it all goes well Adrian and you don't have the nagging pain anymore. It would be good if the replacements weren't metallic, carbon fibre maybe.

Re: Knee Replacement
If your GP has never prescribed "Targin 15mg" painkiller for your pain then he should be shot! Best of luck with the op. Harry

Re: Knee Replacement
Have never had Targin.
I only have one kidney therefore I am limited as to which and how many anti inflammatories I can take on a regular basis. None of the off the shelf pain relief meds work in any noticeable way for me on this knee pain unless I take more than the recommended dose. Panadol Osteo has 100% zero effect. I reckon Bex would have more effect.
I think the main reason my GP didn't want me taking any good stuff prior to the op was that he didn't want me building up a tolerance to it. At least now I can continue the Hydro Therapy that is required. The stuff that was prescribed does not kill the pain completely but it sure takes a good edge off it to the point where I can actually walk without a crutch for an hour or so.

G/Day Mike.
I am trying to build up some strength in my legs n knees in the hope that this will shorten the recovery time. It is a bit of a battle working through the bloody pain but should be worth the effort in the long run.

Re: Knee Replacement
Have you tried a "Tens Machine" Adrian?
Have heard it can help with joint conditions.
Looks like you are already on to it, my mates knee replacement was put on hold until he lost weight & built up strength in his knee.
While still rehabilitating the silly old f**t thought he'd join his nephews swinging off a rope into a pool, hit the bank and broke his good leg.......

Re: Knee Replacement
Yes I have given a Tens machine a run.
It does sort of work for a short while. It is ok on muscle pain but bone on bone friction type pain it is not responsive.

The one I am getting is a combo of titanium and some sort of ceramic stuff and supposedly has a usable life of 15 to 20 years depending on how much you bang it around in the bush.

Re: Knee Replacement
Fingers crossed all goes well for you Adrian. Some form of pain killers, a sensible diet & plenty of physio/exercise to follow, should slowly bring you right back on track. Wish you a speedy recovery.
Cheers Kon.

Went to the pre op info session yesterday. Looks like Targin is one of the PR tabs I will be getting.
I think that this is not going to be a picnic
Seems that these joint replacements are becoming common place. 58000 in Australia in 2015

Re: Knee Replacement
HI jen.
Just got home today from hosp. 18 days in.....Ran into some problems.
Don't listen to anybody who says knee replacements are a walk in the park. It will be a while before I do the second one.
Anyway it is done now and the real rehab begins.

Re: Knee Replacement
The actual op was fine and the knee is healing well. Bloody pain-full tho.
One prob triggered by the op stress n pain slowed things down a bit for a few days.
All is good now aside from a bit of pain n stiffness

Re: Knee Replacement
Infinium picks up my knee from at least 18 inches. (High Low tone).
All of my other tectas respond strongly to this knee metal. (Titanium and some sort of ceramic).

Thanks mate.
All I can say is that anybody considering knee replacement should think carefully and only do it as an absolute last resort.

Re: Knee Replacement
Hope you have a good recovery and particularly, good mobility after.
My missus had both knees done together, yes she knew a bit about pain alright.
The main thing though is to make sure you do the required knee bending exercises even with the pain. There are certain angles to be achieved.
Ten years later she still has full mobility compared to others we know who slacked off on the exercises due to the pain element. They now are very restricted in mobility, require continuing pain medication (typically Mobic/Celebrex) simply because they did not comply with the exercise routine in the initial stage of recovery.
Cheers and good luck

Re: Knee Replacement
Thanks for the advice re the exercises.
Yeah it is tough going doing the the knee exercises when it feels like it is going to break.
I have been doing the hospital rehab exercises for the past week or so and begin a six week program on the 12/Sep, also run by the hospital.
I find it astounding as to how many people are having joint replacements just at the Canberra hospitals alone. At least Four hospitals here are flat out every day.
It seems that while I was in hospital my internet, mbl ph and land line was shut down. I discovered that when I tried to contact my wife from the hospital. Also my bank had had 3 unauthorised attemps to hack into it and so my account was suspended.
Appears that I did not pay our phone bill on time (first time ever) and Overdue bill notice was sent via email and then a few days later my lines were shut down. When I arrived home I thought that the comp had a virus and I called our provider to see if they had any answers. They did. My wife had paid the bills and the phone lines were reinstated but the internet connection was not re established which resulted in in 53 emails that would not download and a few more unpaid. email bills. Anyway it is all up and running again now. But blooming heck! All they had to do was give me two weeks grace and all would have been fine.
When your internet, mbl ph and land line is cut off in one fell swoop it can cause quite a bit of unnecessary grief especially in a medical emergency.

Re: Knee Replacement
Gave the new knee another try out at Pine Island and managed about 1/2 an hour today. It is really slow going and the knee still stiff & painful even after all of the bleeding rehab gym work.
The South Beach area was clean as a whistle except for a few bottle caps and bits of melted aluminium. .Somebody has given it a good work over.
Met another bloke down there with an X-Terra 705 that he was trying out . Not a bad machine for a first go at coin and relic hunting.
