A big bit of silver in the goldfields
All,
Just thought I'd share the best Gothic Florin I've found with you. Easily my favourite coin to find. They are pretty rare in the goldfields, usually the big silvers are either half crowns or shillings. Also found a nice set of gold weights (1, 2 & 4 ou Troy).

Well done GemQ, it is a beautiful well preserved coin. I don't know much about old gold scale weights but the depressions seem strange....... could your finds actually be moulds for making ingots? cheers tributer

Good call Tributer, I was wondering the same thing, I guess the best test would be to weigh them and see if the mark corresponds to the weight, though I wonder if the writing would be in reverse order for a correct transfer?

A BIT OF SILVER IN THE GOLDFIELDS
GemQ wrote:The Gothic Florin is an early one 1855
Thanks for that info..
I have found quite a few English silver and copper coins but only the one copper token..The penny token i found was struck in Birmingham England around 1859 for Robert Parker / Ironmonger of Moorabool Street Geelong..I found it in an old timers dig hole in Linton The goldrush was well underway in 1855 here in Victoria and the Eureka Stockade ( 03/12/1854 ) was still sending shockwaves through the prospecting community.
cheers

Nice silver coin, nice settling weights for a gold scale. Used to have a nice vintage scale with brass weights which were stamped in dwt. all the weights would fit into each other....pretty cool. Nice job !

Wayne.
The depressions in the top were used so the different sized weights could be put inside each other.....a bit like a Babooska Doll if you like so you could keep putting weights in until it balanced with whatever was being weighed on the other side.
It also helped so they all packed away neatly.
Cheers
