Adrian, i hope you don't mind if i add to this by saying,....Also take the shot on the end of an exhaled breath (shooters understand this), as your breath and pulse shortly stop 'at rest' for a synchronous moment and is the most stable time to 'shoot'...even shaky hands can improve their images by using this tip (something akin to deflecting the minds focus from hands to breaths end ).

The moon is fairly bright.
Choose a clear night sky.
500x zoom
ISO 200
1/125 sec. You might have to bracket your exps a bit to get a good result.
F8.
Set manual focus if possible.
Take the pic in RAW if possible, otherwise use what you have.
Use a tripod.
Use a remote shutter or the on board timer to help reduce vibration.

Along with the 300 zoom there is a 2x multiplier in the bag and I have a remote that can be used, will give it a try and see how it turns out.

I'm sure you are aware of the adjustments required to compensate for the image degradation by all the lenses at play using the magnifiers, so would you also like to share some of your settings Nightjar, and what you tried that didn't give the required/hoped result?
This will help heaps of us learn our own cameras more efficiently to get the same result with different settings to each other no?
Cheers

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
If I recall correctly this shot was at close to 2000 zoom F 6.5 at 1/500 sec ISO unknown but probably fast at around 800 to 1600. Cam up against the pergola post while holding my exhaled breath and standing on one leg and swatting a mossie with my free hand.

I'm sure you're jesting Gypsy, I am a complete nerd with all this, usually use the camera on auto although have tried manual a few times with out success. Will give it try when next full moon comes round.
That's what I'd like to achieve Adrian, a clear shot.

Naahh, i wasn't, it read like you knew what you were on about, and had the gear to do it...
Manual can be longer to get 'good' results, but imo, when they come, they are the most gratifying & satisfying to view.
I can't tell you the money i burned up in film rolls trying to sort it out.
All you need to do in your down-time is look at the aspects (data retained) of the auto pics, recall the conditions when the pic was taken, and repeat them manually. Once you can do that, you can then make adjustments (one at a time) each side of centre and see how that effects your image.
We learn by doing...so get out there and start snapping...
Today is easier with instant replay, you just adjust and re-shoot unless it's action or moving objects.

Gypsy,
As mentioned earlier, I take the equipment with me but then find a few nuggets and the cameras forgotten.
Thanks for the advice about reviewing the data from the auto images as a starting point for manual pics. Best bit of advice ever.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
No worries Nightjar. I used to do the same thing with the D40x, take it out, leave it in the truck (worry about theft), have walked too far to go get it, and just keep on detecting etc...
These days i just have a little compact camera (Sony) that takes reasonable pics for field work on the spot, and it's 9-10 yrs old. I have the protective case (like wet-suit material) tied to my harness up on my shoulder. This is another reason where 'technology' works against you, and why i don't paste many pics. They retain too much info. at times.
Then if they are a 'nice' nugget, i take better pics at home and set up the light to suit with my D40x.

If the K10 has a trim setting then the 300 zoom should get a reasonable size image of the full or half moon that can be enlarged/zoomed in the trim mode and saved as a new pic. Also the auto focus should work ok at 300 zoom....(Maybe), otherwise use manual focus for sharpest results.
The 2x converter will help achieve a larger image but at the loss of some resolution although likely not enough to be too bothered about
Adrian.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
Looks like my little buddy has got a missus after all and by the look of them this morning I think that either their roof leaks after all the rain we have been having lately. or they don't have a nest....Which wouldn't surprise me , going by the rate that Canberra trees are being bulldozed in the mad quest for more high density housing / Units space......Where are the Greens when you actually need them???........Oh yeah that's right! They have joined with Labour and are buying into real Estate and bull dozing trees to make way for a light rail/Tram system in Canberra that nobody will use but will cost 50 billion dollars by 2050.....in todays dollars, so by 2050 it should be up over 100 bil in 2050 dollars.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
That model also has Bulb mode....good for taking lightning shots....also, when taking pics of the moon...use Spot mode...your camera model supports this and will help....it also has ISO 100...better for this type of picture where overexposure is a concern. When flicking through the shutter speeds while looking at the bright moon...you'll notice the image becoming softer and more detailed as you speed up the shutter.Nightjar wrote:adrian ss wrote:A 500x zoom will give you a reasonable size image that can be enlarged later. a 1000x is better

Thanks for the extra info Narrawa, did try using the bulb mode but nothing but over exposure was result. Will have a look for the spot mode, didn't come across that one.
When the shine went of the new toy years ago I reverted to auto and has been in that mode since.
Will condense all this info into one sheet and give it a go.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
Bulb mode is not the best for taking pics of objects that are bright like the moon. Best used for things like lightning where the eye (shutter) is held open to capture many strikes. Even this can cause overexposure if the wrong shutter speed is selected.....and the shutter is open for too long. Many cameras have a selection now days...10-15-30-60 ect which enable you to use a tripod to get the same effect...other cameras allow you to select your own time frame...or use bulb mode with a remote.Nightjar wrote:Thanks for the extra info Narrawa, did try using the bulb mode but nothing but over exposure was result. Just know that your camera is quite capable of producing the goods when your up to speed a little on how to use it....but be warned...it can become an addiction just like prospecting....lol
Iv now got 3 cameras, and will be out and about during the night this coming summer feeding the addiction.
I'll get up in the wee hrs to snap a good lightning shot myself......
Constipation ramification at 3am...that caused an instant trouser browser right there...
Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
Wow! Nice shot.
Wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that strike.

Naaaahh, not at all Adrian. Like their feathered brethren, they also scratch around the place and make a mess of whatever's in their way...
