Bigger Coil for the Zed !
Just heard the bigger coil for the Zed is around 6 weeks away, Special Minelab pricing/deal to all Zed's purchased at the original pricing ( $10,700 ) . I'm sure more specific details will be following in the not too distant future.
Sounds good, Not long now !
Cheers

I wonder if they will make the lower shaft longer to get the coil further away from the operator & any metal on the person? you may need an offsider to carry the pick

Problem is Lee, the bigger coil will undoubtedly be a little heavier and pushing it even further away with a longer shaft, will only make the detector even more heavier/harder to swing, it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't type of situation. Maybe Minelab will offer some counter-balances to be placed on the rear of the detector to re-balance it all back out again (?), and then maybe a specially designed trolley to sit the detector on and take the weight, while you're swinging it.... (by the way guys, I'm only joking here)

I can see the new GPZ Threads to be started about the difficulty of pinpointing targets already
But i suppose those huge nuggets are not too difficult to find in the gravels

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
I heard about the bigger coil also, and have ordered a metre length of 28mm OD carbon Fibre rolled tube for the upper shaft to move the coils further from my body.
I am taking a lead from the vic guys who swing monster coils and am in the process of building my backpack with 2L of water, support struts, a thick 15cm wide waist belt with trekking type backpack pads on the waist and shoulders. I have found some bungy cord that when doubled up should give just the right amount of springiness. After putting up with slightly sore shoulders after long days with bigger coils I want to be able to swing a big coil comfortably all day for a change.

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
Re heavy coils, detectors.
we do not have photo, but to solve my problems, i am 6'4" and always had issues with tripping over coils as was to close to me.
we also found some of the coils did not have very long leads so you could have a long lower shaft but could not extend to far as lead would not let you.
we ended up making out own hip stick years ago and used fencing wire, yes fence wire and put a hook on both ends about 8"long. We used a poly pipe t join fitting (1/4" approx small fitting) and had that at one end with a bend in fence wire to hold it at outer end. We then used old fibre glass tent pole and that fitted into t fitting snuggly and on bottom on your belt we used another poly t fitting with fence wire hookong it onto your belt.
the bungy cord then hung off outer end on wire hook so the weight is transfered about 8" further out from your body and down to your waist so there is no back issues.
when set up correctly you can let go of detector and walk slowly and the detector will swing slowly from side to side with no effort at all, does it without even holding detector.
a few of the guys we have met on this forum have seen setup and have also duplicated it so must be ok.
This way the detector is further in front of you and you can move the handle up closer to the control box or in the case of the 7000 you can have the strap looser on arm grip letting your arm go more straighter.
this does work well and takes the weight of detector of your back and shoulders. TG

Knowing Nick, we'll be lucky if he lets us keep 10%
The scary part Kon is how deep the Zed "Whopper" coil is going to go.
This is what the 13" x 14" coil found today. The nugget was in the crack to the right of the rock in the hole and a bit under the rock. 12 inches down!
And this was the pathetic size of the nugget. So pissed off, before I saw it I thought, "If it's a nugget, I'm going to get paid". 12" for a .35 grammer, I couldn't believe it!
What will the "Whopper" coil do?

One step at a time Harry.Lets just see the weight & price of the new 20 inch, before determining its in ground depth,on a multi-ouncer,over that of the 14x13.
That "High Yield mode" never ceases to amaze me Harry, well done.

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
OH' No not another 30% Deeper if I fall into my hole I will have call a friend or SES to get me out How many more time do I have to go back to my old spots there is not enough time left in my life to get back to them as with others we older prospectors are running out of time, just think once summer come up again I could take it off and head to lorne and use it as a boogy board in the surf
The price is going to hurt but I can't complain with over 28.5 ozs of the good stuff found with it since it was release what's $1800 bucks
Love to see how it goes on some Deep Lead it we get abit more rain.

What a coincidence.
W.A. season is almost upon us.
Am I being cynical?
Probably, but at least those who purchased the 7000 at full price will receive one free of charge.
Bugga, there I go again!

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
hi all
just so I understand this
if just for arguments sake a gpx 5000 detects a given size and shape of nugget at say 10 inches deep
minelab say the 7000 had up to a 40% improvement on depth so the same nugget would now be detected at 14 inches
now minelab are claiming a 30% improvement in depth with the new coil over the old 7000 coil
this means the same nugget would be detected at 18.2 inches a depth increase over the 5000 of 82% !!!!!!
not sure if the larger coil would still get the .2s and .3s at 8 to 10 inches down
but might it turn up some very nice deep lumps especially using the normal timings
I purchased my gpz within the first week of release having faith in minelabs product
and have had great success with it. Absolutely no complaints from me
but I might just wait for some feed back before committing $$$$ for the new coil
unless they discount the coil to the early bird buyers of the gpz (now wouldn't that be a nice gesture)
regards
mick

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
Given that this was a faint but clear signal at just over 18 inches with the Zed so at 30% deeper than the 14, by rights this should be able to be heard at about at 24 inces or 600mm clearly if my maths are right.

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
Mick the way I read Minelabs claim of a 30% improvement, is the new coil will go 30% deeper than the current 14" coil.mickb wrote:hi all

If that is the case the nugget that the 5000 will get at 10", the 7000 will get it at maybe 14", and the 30% improvement on that 4" would be about 1½", for a total depth improvement over the 5000 of roughly 5" for about a 50% improvement over the 5000.
That`s how I read it.
cheers

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
Fellas,if that were the case on or all size/type nuggets that the 14x13 could pick up,we'd all be doing back-flips of joy, over the flats and gullies.
Past rule of thumb with PI's was that, the larger the slug of gold, the greater the depth a larger coil would have over it,as compared to a smaller in size coil.
The GPZ though is new technology all together,so I myself cant say what its capable of,until I myself put it to the test.
One thing I can vouch for though,is that I'm currently finding gold with the GPZ,in the most flogged to death of areas, where I couldn't get any more sound/signals,regardless of what I/we have swung over with in the past.
Cheers Kon.

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
I agree there Jay.Not hanging sh*t on the coils performance/capabilities,but here in Vic,that's one open spoke hole to many. There has to be some way of designing a closed bottom, skid plate cover, for its intricate looking shape,or it will keep getting caught on just about everything, sticking up out of the ground.

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
Yeah true Kon. I guess weight was such a big complaint which the Zed they're trying to keep it down.
Although I'm a little sceptical about their claimed performance..... A 3oz nugget at only 2 inches deep? I might trade in the zed for a pin pointer.

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
Baseda, you may not be happy digging deeper holes, (tongue in cheek) but I will be for those nuggets out of reach of other machines/coil combinations.
For us it is the joy of unearthing gold and if it is a bigger slug then the more smiles you will see on my face.
For us it is a hobby and we get to cover 3 or more hobbies at once, 4WD'ing, camping, photography and prospecting.
Bring on the bigger coil, will be much cheaper than a new boat or large screen tv to watch your favorite movie or sport.
and yes, it will probably get cheaper next year, most things are going down in price once they are released a while in todays economic times.

Re: Bigger Coil for the Zed !
I couldn't agree with ya more travelergold. Performance of this new coil is yet to be judged, but judging by what I & or other 7000 users have experienced out on the field, with the 7000 standard 14x13 coil so far, leaves me little room for doubt. Bring it on Minelab,
