17 Inch Elliptical Nugget Finder setting for the GPX4000
Hi I have my new coil in the post today and was wondering what settings to use, apart from the mono coil, but what about sensitive setting and gain, i've heard of people using the gain as low as 3-4 with mono coils. Any help would be great.

Hello Matt, as with any mono coil it all depends on the amount of mineralisation present. Generally up in the northern areas of Australia especially in the gullies the Normal or Senstive Xtra are best for outright depth, however if the ground is extremely mineralised then you either have to revert to a DD coil or use the Smooth timings. There is a good video up on MLOTV about this if your interested MLOTV Timings explained or head off to the Minelab website for some more general info about timings. Minelab web site
If using the Smooth timings the smaller the coil the greater the sensitivity, you can also increase the Gain somewhat.
Hope this helps,
JP
BTW I've produced an instructional DVD on the GPX-4000 called "The GPX Factor" if you are interested.

Hi John, thanks for your advice, and I got your Dvd about 3 weeks ago, loved it and still sit down after a day out and watch a particular part that applies to me, first day out with the new NF coil and 2 pieces.
Cheers Matt

i have brought an 8" mono and some grounds are good but then some are realy noizie. i have my 4000 on smooth settings and had to drop the gain right down to 4 or even 2...but on the diggings and realy good ground i can boost it right up...monos they love the hot rocks, dug one up about 8" down, couldn't believe it.

SETA fixes a lot of those issues with the 4000, the hot rocks are most probably highly magnetic in nature (see anomalous ground section in GPX Factor DVD if you have it). I am surprised you had to back off your Gain to such a low level, is the ground conductive at all?

hey jp, i'm hopping to get the dvd this week, it's an open paddock that i think has been ripped up sometime and there is a lot off hot rock and quartz. there are very big hills right around the paddok with a heap off diggings on them. my mate has a gp extreem that has been modded and he don't have any problem with ground noize and that now and then hill pick a hot rock up. even with the standard 11"dd it can get pretty bad with ground noize....i'm not sure why tho.
