dry season with heavy rain
I have never experienced a flood during the dry season. 700 km of 4 wheel driving through the night otherwise it would have been tins of tuna and beans for who knows how long. BUT WE LOVED THE ADVENTURE

Re: dry season with heavy rain
I forgot to add something very important with this image.
Never ask the police to give you information relating to road conditions - they havn't got a clue!!!!
The only reason we got stuck was because we got the all clear on the northern end of the road and meanwhile they were closing it on the southern end. What has happened to mobile phone technology.
The funny thing was that the next morning helicopters were flying in to check stranded vehicles.
Next time I will only ask the local aborigines - they were the smart ones who stopped, lit a fire and just chilled out (bloody cold it was)

Re: dry season with heavy rain
hllo Vasilis, got to watch that police station advice, was stuck in Wilcannia one night, been trying to get to Bourk up the Darling track, but she was in flood, was the day the town of Ningan disapeared under all that muddy water, went to the cop shop and asked where was a good place to camp for the night, they all looked at each other and burst out laughing then one of them said , pointing to each end of the town, 250 ks that way or 250 ks that way, come to think of it wasnt bad advice, phill

Re: dry season with heavy rain
It was the Tanami track and we got the rain coming south. We got through to rabbit flat roadhouse and then got some news of what lay ahead. 45 mm of rain fell during the night and we were heading straight into another downpoor. Almost bailed out at one point during the night after sliding off the road but a passing truck and another 4 wdrive teamed up with us so kept going. Got to the point where all 3 trucks bogged so time to eat baked beans with bread and Jam until 5 am when we could see what lay ahead.
The swimming pool just got bigger and of course no snorkel on the car so it was a tricky moment considering options. We knew though that we got the bulk of the travel done so what the hell just another very long 20 km to get to bitumen until you guessed it - RUN OUT OF FUEL> who would imagine but driving in 4wheel drive chews up the fuel. Only one option now. The ruck we tailed was on reserve and the other car also on reserve and they were towing an off road camper so no option but to take the rest of his spare fuel (all 2 lit) and drive on. Poor things but bless their souls they sacrificed their fuel until we returned for them.
It really does show how important it is to back each other up although we were total strangers by the night.
Perhaps an alternative would have been to harness the propulsion from the baked beans and just fly over the mud!

Yes of course we did and gave them a full 20 lit and a big thanks to Lesli and Gavin who bailed us out.(not prospectors but great travellers)

Re: dry season with heavy rain
Hi fastgold it was tough going but luckily the tanami has a good solid base below the mud otherwise we would still be there.
Went through at night so no fuel on the way. I am sure I would have found Uncle Rex Granites who I know in Yuendemu but knowing him he would be travelling somewhere.
The granites mine is in full swing and has expanded and there is now another mine out there. Had to poke around in this region. The geo's find you anyway. would love to get permission to look around one day but a lot of ground and most is aboriginal ground. Although I was given a name when I worked in Willowra it's still a sensitive issue with gold.
Sounds you like you know this country well!

Re: dry season with heavy rain
Hi Fastgold. I was always without a detector when in good gold country and only got to the kimberley region a few times a long time ago and now trying to continue the prospecting.
You know what it's like, life got a hold of me and distracted with other ventures.
I think I need another trip for many months to check out some of the places you mention.
Any suggestions always welcome.
If you can share some private info for areas around Alice I can tell a few secrets also with PM.
cheers
