Pesky Flies
G/day All
We came across this product and it works, just a little around the eyes and ears and the mongrel flies take a hike.
You can order it online and you can get it at the gold buyers in Kalgoorlie an the roadhouse in Menzies.

Re: Pesky Flies
Gday
Been using that product for awhile now, and it keeps them at bay for a short while but they soon become persistant again, I bought mine from a place that sold horse things, something like city farmers.
Anyway here are some facts about flies, I always used to think that they were getting into your face because they were thirsty, well thats partially correct, and thought that all the flies about the place were the same but thats not entirely correct either.
There are two types of the smaller fly that we get that are pesky to humans one is the "house fly" and of course it has been named the house fly because it likes to be indoors, the house fly carries more germs than the bush fly as it lives on garbage dumps etc, they are slightly bigger than the bush fly, and are not as persisitant at bothering you.
The "bush fly" is smaller and far more persistant than the house fly, it does not like being inside and you might have noticed that when they get inside your vehicle or tent they go for the widows and try to get out, apparently they are reluctant to go into dark covered areas, but of course we know that they still do it, anyway the first reason that they are so persistant is because, only the females, once they hatch they have to get animal proteins in order to become fertile, so that is why they are into your nose, eyes or on to any cuts or scratches that can give them body fluids.
They do not have any means of controlling their body temperature so as you would have noticed the hotter it gets the more persisitant and agressive they become, add this to the inbuilt urge to get to body fluids at all costs and you can see why they drive you mad, I used to always say that they were solar powered "little B's and was correct all along without knowing it, and no matter how much to swat them away they are back more determined than ever, they hit the ground re assemble themselves and are straight back into the action.
I always wondered also how they seemed to just turn up within a minute or so of you getting somewhere, you no sooner say "great no flies" and the first sucker is straight up your nose, they find you by your exhaled breath, as you exhale and your breath is carried away on the wind the flies smell it and home in on you from down wind apparently from hundreds of meters away.
Bush flies dont carry as many bacteria as house flies but they still carry bacteria and germs that can make you very sick, it is important to make sure you cover your eyes, as you can easily get an eye infection that will stay with you for some time.
They have always been here, but they were nowhere near the pest that they are now, thanks to the introduction of cattle and sheep to the country, prior to that they only had dead animals and droppings from Kangaroos etc to breed from, which dried out rather quickly and gave them a limited time, but a big sloppy cow pat gives them much more time and will produce many more flies, combine that with the huge amount of road kills and its easy to see why the fly population in some areas is so massive.
cheers

Hi Mono,
Like stayyerAU, I found it worked well on my hands, but only for a short time. I used it for a couple of weeks around Leoora in May.
How did you do at Chain Bore Mono ?

Re: Pesky Flies
After summer - winter detecting in the Triangle is bliss. A little sweat, very few Flies, Bullants no Marchies and just a mosquito or two.

Re: Pesky Flies
Couple of good products there!!
Areogaurd feeds them doesn't it??
Much better option to use these natural products than to be rubbing chemicals etc into your face.
The use of pyrethrin is good, natural repellant and they grow this in Tasmania I do believe.

Re: Pesky Flies
The best anti fly cream I have found to be successful can be purchased from Angie who runs a shop in Cue.
I have been using the cream made from natural products for a couple of years & works very well at keeping
flies away all day long.
Just dab a little around the eyes, nose & ears.
It comes in 2 size jars at $20.00 for the large jar which will last for quite awhile.
You can get it here:
CUE GOLDEN ART SHOP
PO BOX 76 AUSTIN ST
CUE WA 6640 PHONE: 9963 1936
Cheers

Fly Repellent
Nature's Botanicals is the best I have ever used!
It comes as a roll on and also in a Jar, but 20 dollars is very steep. I have bought it from a couple of outback/horse type places for under $10.
It is the same stuff I can assure you. There is nothing better as far as I'm concerned. The fly's come in, smell the stuff and don't land, I've tried all types and guarantee this is the best stuff, but not at $20! Check around! $20 is about twice the recommended retail price.
