Insect Repellent Empty Insect Repellent

Post  Guest Sun Oct 27, 2013 3:53 pm

Hi Guys
I know this has been discussed many times before. But what is the best insect repellent around these days. I was out detecting today and the flies were driving me mad (no comment please Laughing ) to the extent I had to call it a day ever though I had Airoguard on.  I think I would have had a better chance of getting rid of the flies if I just chucked the can at them. Shocked
I think the Flies have got use to that stuff now the same way that rabbits got use to Myxomatosis Crying or Very sad

I was looking at Bushmans but which one I'm not sure of as there are many types scratch

Insect Repellent Empty Re f&&off flies

Post  Guest Sun Oct 27, 2013 5:04 pm

What mono said wombat ,rosemary and cedar wood from natures botanical .nothing comes close on flies.its not worth a cracker on mossies .it stays on when you sweat where bushmans isn't that good for you and sweats off .bout 15 pesos for a big screw top jar which lasts ages.ideally you put it on then bout a half hour later just dab a bit more On ,then you should be right for the rest of the day.bcf used to stock it not sure bout rays.mulwala fish camp had heaps of it if you know anyone going over there for a fish.they have got a web site.just be careful if you have sensitive skin .it can burn if you do.i quit detecting last week cos I left it at work and all I had was bushmans and the flies this year are horrible sticky little boogers.

Had an uncle who used to eat raw garlic by the handful. Never got bitten by mozies, he did get buzzed by flies but they'd never land on him. He used to sit there in the corner by himself whilst the rest of would be going mad squatting flies. He was a very, very lonely man...

Q28  Bill, try RID Repellant "Tropical Strength'' works brilliantly on mossies, but the flies this year are a new ''superbreed'' Q07 and it's gonna take something really bloody powerful to knock em out affraid

The RID comes in spray or roll-on..the roll-on is better coz you can plaster the stuff on cheers

Best of luck...Dave

Met up with Edith a 35year veteran of swinging the coil, she had corks hanging off her wide brim straw hat. They won't the large corks, but small ones 10-15mm. Whilst I chatted to her I was constantly swatting flies away (with heaps of 'Bushmans repellent' on me), whereas she wasen't hassled once...Can't get anymore 'natural' than that! drunken

I use a fly net once the little buggers start to become annoying. At least wearing that keeps them off your face. Can't stand 'em.

I use a fly net most of the time although they can be a nuisance at times. Otherwise a squirt of Bushmans helps.

I think the Bushmans is great but its real potent stuff if you apply to much to your skin, your body absorbs it and you end up with a terrible headache. So I wear a long sleeve cotton drill shirt, apply the Bushmans lightly over shirt in combo with a hat & fly net. This way you don't sweat it off, but remember don't use your favorite shirt, and like Ark said don't get it on most plastics.

Yep I try and do as you do Black Al ! I have tried all those natural remedies but for me they don't work !! Some ppl swear by them but like you a hat ,net, long sleeve shirt ect and then Bushmans on your clothing is the way to go!

Another vote for Natures Botanical, we got ours from a local stock feed outlet. It is also great for dabbing on the inevitable scratches.

You are not wrong about flies there Wombat.I think this is the worse year so far.

Well i think the mariner3800 is right.Get the fly net.

The last trip i had to put one on and Phoenix saved me as i did not have one of my own. cheers

It was great to be able to detect and not to be bothered by flies.

I used all sort of commercial products but the flies were persistent.
The best part of it is i look outside the square now lol!

The aero guard formula is changed every year to try and stop them getting used to it !!!
Flys only live for about a month. Perhaps we should study them some more,  they maybe able to help us outsmart the common flu/cold....which changers per year also.Laughing Laughing

Hey Wombat, try Cancer Council Repel, it's a 30+ Sunscreen plus insect repellent for flies and mosquitoes. You can get it in a tube or larger 500ml pump container. It keeps them off me.

Another vote for Natures Botanical.
Doesn't stop them buzzing around you but will stop them landing. I am still on the same small tub after 2 years. It's a shame it doesn't counter the mozzies though.

Yet another vote for Natures Botanical on flies (including those ones with the teeth on em in WA).

I was told by Wesfarmers over there that the mines buy the stuff in bulk. Good enough for them, good enough for me.

+1 for fly net also
