Junk in gold area a good sign?
I have been looking in an old gold area Victoria and by the amount of junk I am finding (100 year old nails) I am thinking it has at least not been gone over my a lot of detectors. The other explanation is they all know I'm in a bad area!

Hi Pixulator
If the trash is from the old timers its a good sign.Musket balls are a good indicator that the earlier detectors have missed the area as well. Also look for old glass and china.Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Thanks.. Yes my original intention was all about Gold Gold Gold, but I have also become interested in the other old targets I find and it is just as well as I have not hit gold yet. Only two weekends in. If any one is interested I can post some pictures of what I have found. I have found a small ball did not think it was a musket though? It is 10mm diameter.

Hi Pixulator
If it looks like a sinker without the hole its a musket ball. There are many valuable things to be found amongst the junk, coins, relics etc.I once found a 26g gold fob watch chain.Your chance of a good sized nugget is often better in junky areas now days.

Re: Junk in gold area a good sign?
Related, I have found many old filled in shafts.. They may be test hole as they are only a couple of feet wide. In one I found lots of old iron and am considering doffing it out. Just wondering if any one can comment on how diligent the old timers were could they have missed gold in these holes? Most of these holes are market with a branch crossing it and the branch looks newish so am unsure if some good person has put it in place for safety, but then they did not bother digging it. It is very interesting trying to play detective on this topic.
