How well would a Soveriegn be at getting gold and to what size gold could it detect??
I have an old Soveriegn that could be put to good use as a tecta for my eldest boy.
Question is, will it pick up the gold? I know it isnt as sensitive as the GP models but to let him play around with this machine is good enough for me.
Cheers and HH
Brad.. This icon looked a bit like me when I was younger I had hair.

Hi Brad,I used an early sovereign extensively and did find a 9ct ring mainly because of the silver content at a very shallow depth.Found nothing in the goldfields except old coins.Very poor on gold but I believe the newer models like the GT are more sensitive to gold perhaps someone could elaborate or has experience with these.

I have been using my Sov XS for close on 14 years and although it is primarily a coin and relic machine it is capable of a fair job in the gold fields.
I used it in the Wedderburn gold fields with some success using the 15 inch Wot coil. The detector does not like high iron mineralisation.
The All Metal mode will give the most stable operation but is not as sensitive as the disc mode. The All metal mode is capable of responding to some 0.1gm nuggs at a couple of inches.
if you use the disc mode while searching for gold make sure that the disc is at zero and or the Iron mask is switched off. Iron mineralisation can make quite large nuggets sound like iron. I dug a two oz piece that gave a low tone in disc mode and it was only a few inches down. The All Metal signal was very strong. The bottom line is if you are going to use the Sov in the gold fields, use the All Metal mode and dig all signals.
If mineralisation is low then try the disc mode for that little bit of extra sensitivity and dig all signals no matter what the tone.
