Clermont GPA Locations
I was just wondering if anybody has GPS points for the Clermont GPA's?
As the coords given on the maps from the gumbyment website are only gri refs from a larger map but no reference to what maps. I'm trying to get the full GPS coords so I can plot the GPA's on google earth as part of my research.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
Switch your GPS to UTM coordinates instead of Lat/Long and everything is good to go.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
That's right these are UTM's just change to UTM in your GPS and change it to this and it will work no worries.
These are also refered to as Eastings and Northings exactly the same as UTM system, there is no better system IMO.
Go to Google Earth and in Options change it to UTM as well and you will see the area your looking at and just read of the numbers, there is also a map area number they all vary but could be something like J55 or H56 or whatever this lets the GPS know what aprox area then the other numbers ending in E and N are the rest.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
So how do I put them into google earth?
I've changed to UTM, but still it puts me in the middle of Russia with the coords I put in. I can't find any reference in GE about a Map Zone or anything

Google Earth is really set up for WGS 84 Lat and Lon. To overcome this I select UTM like you have. Use the place maker (The Yellow Pin Icon with the + sign) When you left click it Fill in your co-ordinates.
If you have a program like OziExplorer or the likes that take UTM you can load your co-ordinate in to the program and save them as KML,KMZ or GPX files and open them with Google Earth. You might wish to look at HistoricalGoldMine on this forum at this link https://golddetecting.forumotion.net/t2273-historical-gold-mines-in-google-earth and select The QLD KMZ file.
I plan to up date all of QLD files in the near future so they will be more prospector friendly like I have done for Vic,NSW and WA.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
Thanks guys, finally got it right..
Here is the GPA's at Clermont...
And heres the GPA's with the surrounding old mines included...
Seriously, that many mines in the area, I can't really believe that the GPA's are flogged yet.
But I'm definatly not against the push to open new areas up as well

G'day BrisJoe
It's good to see your getting the hang of it, now I see your Clermont GPA's picture you have marked out is nearly upside down though, McMasters is north of Clermont and not South West
When using Google earth just hit the N button at the top rh side of the screen to turn things the right way up.
Clermont.

How about letting us know where you was having problems, it may help others from getting them selves in a knot too.
It good to see you share your work on this forum.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
The problem I was having was I was trying to search for the coords on the search bar on the left, rather then place a pinpoint and manually enter the coords in there.
And how I got the borders of the GPA's in the above maps was image overlay of the GPA maps from the gov website, and then trace a path over the borders of them after matching them up road to road, creek to creek so the maps were 1:1 ratio (took about an hour to do all GPA's) and then on the left hand menu unselect the overlay images so it's back to the google earth maps only with the GPA border. The pinpoints on each area is the signposts for each GPA, so when traveling to them, I can plot my GPS to those points to easily find them.
My reason for drawing the GPA's onto GE was to cross reference it with my map of old gold mines, so I can pick possible locations to hit up when I go there, and also so when I find nuggets, I can plot their position. I also have a folder with laminated copies of the maps with my plotting gear in the folder so in the field I can mark the spots, and also grid off on the map areas I have covered. (Don't we all love navigation excercises)
So my p[lan is when I eventually get to buy my detector this year, I will know the exact locations in the GPA's to head for, rather then a willy-nilly spot, and hopefully away from the most popular areas.
I don't really think I will waste time on Town Reserve GPA (guessing that is the most visited area of all?)
If you are interested I can do a decent writeup with images and such about how to image overlay the maps etc?

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
I thought that UTM in the search might of been your problem. OziExplorer is the most used program by Prospectors these days. The PDF maps can be converted to Jpeg files (or scanned and saved as a Jpeg) and load and calibrated it in OziExplorer.
Once you have the map in OziExplorer create a manual track around your area (GPA) and save in the GPX format. Open Google Earth. In Google Earth click File......Open.......Select the Track GPX file......Then file type = GPX (not KMZ,KLM,etc) If you then go to Temporary Places and click on the file you loaded Google Earth will then zoom to the Track on the SatMap.
Of coarse there are other Programs but are more expensive and have a large learning base.

I did 2 writeups, 1 for the image overlay proceedure, and the 2nd how I drew the borders around the GPA's..

G'day BrisJoe
You can also add the boundary waypoints straight into yur GPS manually and then join the points up consecutively in order and convert them into a Route and you will then also have a very accurate outline for the boundary.
We do this regularly for lease boundary's when in WA that way you know when your within the area where you can be and you can easily see when your approaching the edge of a boundary.
It's easy when there are only 4 corners to a lease, and its a bit more tricky if there are lots of angles and various shapes to a lease, but still easy enough to do.
Like geof_junk says Oziexplorer is great as well and it gets a regular workout and when hooked up with a GPS on a laptop/tablet, you can see what is what and if using a geo map you also see what ground type your on.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
Fair enough if you know the GPS points of lease boundaries, but in the case of the Clermont GPA the points of reference given is the information signs, although given the starting point it wouldn't be difficult to sit down with a map protractor and calculate the boundaries, just a bIt time consuming, especially since in this case the leases are not the standard rectangle as if we were on our own ML.
Re: Clermont GPA Locations
BrisJoe,
Thanks for your feedback, I'm sure it will be of great value to a lot of members here. I have been using GPS since 1995 and OziExplorer a few years earlier. In those days there was not much help about even the Web was useless then. I now use Global Mapper and after learning curve it is very easy for me to do all my own maps. I can import most maps and calibrate the others in a couple of minutes and save them as Google Overlay maps. The shapefiles are also quick to make and save. All this can be loaded on a 10" Netbook and run with my GPS attached. In fact most of the historical data that I have put on this forum has been done using GlobalMapper and Excel. However this Program is not used by most because of it cost and learning curve, but your work with GoogleEarth will help most members. So thanks again for your input.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
Hey Geof, where does one get copies of the topo maps for use in Ozi?
I've got the Hema 2008 maps DVD but they are really just scans of the tourist area info maps and there are huge areas in between the maps not covered.
Where could I get like the whole central Qld in topo? since GE only does satallite view

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
I bought the 2008 250,000:1 Australian topo and Geo Map DVD and oztopo 4 microSD card
Dave has given you some good links in previous post.
http://www.oziexplorer3.com/eng/aussie.html
ECW maps from the Geoscience Australia website (freely available for public download), but have to do a search for map name or Zone eg 55 zone. ECW maps are my favourite format and there are some free add on in OziExplorer that allow you to automatic upload ECW and create calibration files ( .map files) for you.
Hope this gets you going.

Re: Clermont GPA Locations
BrisJoe, i basically took the internet maps, as found on the DNRM website, and orientated roads, rivers, fences, etc......and dragged "polygons" or boundaries on google to form similar shapes in the google map window. Did this for each GPA as you can name them in google earth.
After I then go out I then plot the GPS track on google to see where I was for the day. The boundaries of the GPA's to be "close enough" for my purpose.
I hope this helps....maybe there are people with better ideas than mine. Hope this helps!

Did any one try it out on GoogleEarth. The area is about 100Km wide. I found it was good for locating and Zooming in on a spot and then unticking the Map to see satmap underneath. How was the Zoom in and out quality on your Computer.
