Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Well I have a question hopefully someone can answer me regarding the best setting for 17 and above mono coils for best response on deep gold. I read the manual, and in the tip section on the bottom it states that at times 3 or less is on the stabilizer setting may work better for the deeper gold. Than some on the forum said, go factory preset and no more than a click or two beyond fp. So I am asking those that actually use larger coils regularly what is you setting on the stabilizer? What I have also tried was going to fp on stabilizer and reduced the gain to 8-12 for stability...the problem is I am not sure if I am getting the dept I need for the ounce and above at max. debt. Anyways any advice is appreciated...
Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Hi Relichunter
Mostly the stabilizer is set a couple of points lower than the Rx.Its unlikely you would miss larger gold at depth with low settings, more likely miss small gold. However running low settings may actually improve hearing a deep target when the machine runs quieter. The 17" would not be classified as a large coil as its width and sharp tip makes it sensitive to small gold, with some ability at deep targets.I would suggest the 16" and 18" or above in round coils would be considered large.
The settings should be at a point at which the threshold becomes reasonably quiet. There is also some good info in the user manual on setting up your machine.

Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Deutran,
Thanks for answering my question..you have given me confirmation that with lower settings on the stabilizer I will not miss the large nuggets down deep. I bought a 20" NF Mono R and only use it when I clear an area of trash. On one site I am working I found some nice large ones and I want to make sure I don't miss anymore. I am new to large coils like the 20", I am not experienced with it so this is why I ask such basic questions. these are the settings on my front panel :
Front Panel:
General
Normal
Fixed
Mono
Back Panel:
Back light - off
Volume limit-12 or fp
Ground balance-General
Timing- sens -extra....it appears I should changed this setting to Sharp as it provides a broader detection field?
Motion- slow-very slow
RX- 10-13
Audio -Normal..(at times I use Quite).
Stabilizer- 2-4
Response-Normal
Tracking-Med
Iron Reject-off
So these are my settings for deep gold in moderate California grounds.
If anyone has any suggestions...I am open to hearing from you....guys ..and gals I just don't want to miss the BIGGIES,,,,, Happy Holidays and Happy New Years..from California

Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Hi Relichunter
Sharp will be the most powerfull of your timings but may add unneccesary ground noise.Sen xtra is a good balance to use as well as salt gold depending on your ground type.
Your Stabilizer setting of 2-4 may be too low with an RX of 10-13.Try an RX of 8-10 and a Stab at 6 perhaps. If you find it not smooth enough drop the Target volume a little.
Have you tried burying some large targets with medium-good conductivity such as Aluminium this may help.
Good luck with your search.

Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Deutran,
I will give your suggestions a try this week. I will increase the Stab...to 6 and reduce the gain to 8-10 and try out some tests. If I still have some ground noise I will reduce the target volume and experiment a bit t see what's has the best target response. Thanks again!

Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Hi , if on the front panel you are operating in N - normal soil timings, you will be unable to use the soil timings on the back screen even though you can still scroll through and select them eg. Fine Gold Sharp etc. You need to be in Special I think it is on the front panel then go to the back and select the other Soil Timings. I know this is true for the 4500 and pretty sure its the same for the 5000. I have found Normal a very deep seeking Soil Timing to use but find it is a bit prone to ground noise where I detect. Anyway Goodluck and a Merry Christmas.

Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Marty,
I always run it in Normal....been trying Deep setting also and notice when you set it to deep, it goes to fp on the back panel. But I am still getting used to the sound change from Normal to Deep. Takes getting used to, But you brought a good point , maybe I should just try in Special so I can adjust timings on the back panel. I can at least experiment with it. I have observed that many use either the Normal or Deep mode the most, and adjust the back panel depending on coil size , type and ground conditions.

Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
G'day relichunter2
On the front panel, "normal" that you use is in the "soil timings" switch. Deep General and custom are in the "search mode" switch and are just a pre set of settings that can be easily accessed at the flick of a switch.
If you want to use soil timings like sensetive extra, sharp, and smooth or (fine gold for a 5000), plus some others then you need the Soil Timings switch on the front panel to be in the SPECIAL position.
So for example your are in the enhance switch position that is all you are in, if it is in the normal position that is all you are in, regardless of what the back panel menu says. If you are in Special then you have access to all the back panel menu choices for the extra timings under the "Special" selection.
You will get more depth from normal as it is a full timing just like the GP3500 was for eg.
In my opinion Sharp is more suited to a DD coil, sharp puts around 20% more power to the coil, but when I have tried it with a mono which wasn't often it was way to noisy, it may be ok over there on less mineralised type soils.
cheers dave

Re: Proper Stabilizer setting for Large Mono coils?
Thanks Dave and Marty for clearing that up.
Relichunter, when you switch to Deep from what I remember it also changes the audio to boost, this may be the sound change that your experiencing.

And going to deep of the front switch also inverts the signal response, so if your used to hearing a small target go hi/lo then this will make it go lo/hi and on big targets it will go hi/lo instead if lo/hi. you can easily change it back the other way if you like.
