NATMAP Digital Maps
G'day, I have just purchased the latest 2008 release NATMAP digital maps 1:250 000 and need some advice on how to open these in Aussie Explorer or get directed to a web page that offers advice on it. I was shown how in a meeting with a Geo in Kalgoorlie recently but as it was 11 O'clock at night I had driven 800+ Ks that day the info did not stick.
Thanks in advance
Jonathan

Fantastic info guys thanks heaps. Now for another question, how do I get all the maps to load together rather than individually?

Re: NATMAP Digital Maps
I was under the understanding that the 2008 Natmap series was one map of Australia & not a series maps like the earlier editions. The natmap web-site quotes: "All 514 mapsheets joined into a seamless map mosaic at 1:250 000 scale (Geographic/Equirectangular projection) - suitable for location based activities."
Correct me if I'm wrong but as I understand it the download should only consist of one map & not a series of maps. If this is the case then the Raster .ecw file of the map can be converted to an OziExplorer .map or .ozfx3 file using the OziExplorer conversion tools available on the OziExplorer website.
Cheers

Re: NATMAP Digital Maps
JP
Hope you can see how this is done
Once you have downloaded the The Natmap map file from that website to your PC you open the download so that it will load all the map file into your Ozi-Explorer and from there you will see the the folder C:Drive/Ozi-Explorer/Maps and look down the list under maps and it will look like this
Now you need to put the Map Image with the map file that you can see above and the main one you want is the (Natmap 250K Mosaic) Now to find it on the DVD and it is on the DVD 1 so put your DVD in the drive and open it up till you see this
Once you have copyed the Image you need to paste it with the same map file as you see on the first picture
Natmap 250K Mosaic.
then you will see two file like this in your ozi/maps/Natmap Digital Maps 2008/DVD1
Natmap 1 Million Mosaic
Natmap 5 Million Mosaic
Natmap 20 Million
Natmap 250K Mosaic
250K
Natmap Landsat 7 Mosaic
once you have the list looking like this you can then open ozi and load the map.which will be this one
Natmap 250K Mosaic
250K
which covers all australia
JH
If you don't want to load the map image onto your hard drive as it is 2.8Gigs in size you can load the image of the DVD
Just open Ozi-Explorer up go to load>load map file >find this Natmap 250K Mosaic and click on it and you will see this
Click on the Browse and find the 250K file on the DVD 1 and click on it and it will open.
Hope you work all that out

Re: NATMAP Digital Maps
I have to say the move of the MSN forum to this new area has been a good thing, am still getting my head around the funky skin layout (too much background bleeding through the main for me I'm afraid), but the ability to edit posts and so far no lock ups or down time is a good thing. Well done moderators, as can be seen by the almost instant answer to my question this forum is doing what it is supposed to very effectively.

Re: NATMAP Digital Maps
Hi Jonathan,
You may already have this but if you or anyone else hasn't it will make life easier, especially getting from place to place on those huge mosaic maps. Download these http://www.festy.org/maps/au_names.zip, unzip and copy them to your Oziexplorer/name search folder. Open Oziexplorer and use the following steps to install the name database.
You will then be able to use the "name to find" field to search for things like pastoral stations, geographic features such as mountains, lakes etc. Double click on the place name and it will bring up your map choices for that location and take you straight there. Handy for getting to places you may want to explore but don't have any existing waypoints.

Re: NATMAP Digital Maps
Have fun JP. Ozi sure is a good bit of software, there is so much you can do with it. There is also another name database and some other Ozi stuff at http://www.gpsoz.com.au/OziExplorer_Users.htm. Their database file is much larger (and slower) but has also been broken down into state files, which have bores and wells etc listed. I most often use the previously mentioned database though to avoid confusion because as you would know, how many well's are out there with the same names? and WA is a big place!
