'New' SD2000 Empty 'New' SD2000

Post  Lamo Thu Oct 03, 2013 11:24 am

Hey Guys,
After borrowing a mates Whites detector quite a number of times and having absolutely no luck finding any Gold. I've just bought myself my first detector from a local here in Townsville. Up side, it was a good price - down side, it's been modded. It has a sensitivity dial on the back. The seller spun some story about it controlling the depth but more than likely he had no idea what it was about.

It is VERY hard to ground balance and I cant get a nice even tone - not even close. I want the modification gone. Has anyone got some pictures of the circuit board for the SD? Before I remove anything I would like to see what an unmolested circuit looks like. I'm not after a diagram just pictures.

Further investigation shows that the mod was to add two extra frequencies.

Copied from the minelabmods web page.

'The frequencies in the SD2000 came in 2 varieties, 1.92Mhz/2.073Mhz and 2.073Mhz/2.2Mhz. The most common being the former. Now the 4 position switch gives the ability to switch between the 2 inbuilt and 2 additional frequencies (generally 2.4Mhz & 3.0Mhz).'

Thanks for the advice. I was going to look for someone that could service the SD. But first, I'll head out to the fields and give it a good going.
Liam.

Hi Lamo, if you flick the switch to position 1, then I think it should behave like a standard 2000. If you can't ground balance it, then you may have a different problem that needs attention, and as mentioned earlier, Mechanic is the person you should contact to possibly rectify the problem.

I've removed the mod. From the looks of it, it wasn't done properly anyway. The threshold is now close to acceptable. I am testing this at home which is around 100 meters from major power lines. When I go out on the weekend I'll see how it goes.

Wow, big step there Lamo, cause a lot of people using the 2000s really liked that mod...must've been a dud installation as you say.

It's quite a simple mod to do CostasDee. I'm surprised the person who did it got it so wrong. The new crystals were barely holding on. The solder joints were very flimsy and weak. The switch that was used is totally wrong and the wiring was done in a way that made it jam under one of the circuit boards causing a nice kink in it.

I'll play with it for a while in it's standard form and then later (after i've found mammoth amounts of gold with it) I'll re install the mod properly. That way, I should be able to tell the difference.

Sounds like a plan there Lamo, let us know (in time) what you think of the before and after use.
