Hi fabphil,
Spent a little time in Rheola myself but even though there was a little colour, not a lot to write home about. You'll find a great little camping spot up at Melville Caves which is on the Dunolly-Wedderburn Rd. Great scenery and a firepit for each car spot. Don't be tempted to detect around the campsite though as it's a no-go zone and part of the State Park. As far as the ground goes, it's a fraction on the noisy side and if you get a spot where it isn't noisy, then it's probably because it's slightly deeper ground. Closest shops are miles away so go there stocked up for the week. If you get tired of Rheola, Kingower isn't too far away from there too.

Hope you do fabphil. Rheola produced a lot of big nuggets in its time, but a lot where dug out of the gullies. I've found a 6gm and a 2gm and my pal found a 1oz somewhere there (location undisclosed) and some of the other boys found some subbies. It has seen a lot of attention in times gone by, but that's not to say there isn't the odd piece still hanging around as our finds proved. I have a soft spot for Rheola and one day I hope to have a bit of time for a revisit. I've already earmarked a little "X" on the map that I'm sure is ready to give up it's gold to me...one day.
There's gold up that way somewhere fabphil, best of luck finding it and I hope you do (except from my little secret "X" spot that is).
