Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
are there Chinese diggings nearby?
If a Chinese miner died and had no immeadiate family, often he was burried where he fell. Many times not deap either.
Have unearthed two at Ophir over the years

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
If the tooth is worn down considerably at the contact surface, you may consider the possibility that it was an Aboriginal. Their worn teeth show the effects of stone-ground foods. I can't tell from your photographs. The body looks to have broken apart and the sediments around the bones suggest old wash. Possibly Chinese (as suggested above) or possibly a fossicker in a collapsed tunnel. Those holes under the gravel wash were very prone to collapse.
Interesting find! And creepy too!
Cheers,
Marco

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
Hi Mick
Very interesting and glad you found it and not me.
I agree it's an old grave and most likely Aboriginal but would suggest you report the find to the police , it's good you put this up for all to see but remember this is a public forum and it's better for you to do the above first as I'm sure you will be contacted sooner than later .
I would expect there would be a few prospectors out there who have come across similar and I have heard stories land holders keep any finds like that quiet for obvious reasons.
Just my too bobs worth and your call.
Keep up the good posts
Cheers Mark

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
Gday Mick
I am with Mark on this one and think it important that you let the police know asap, from the photos and comments by other members I would tend to think myself that it was most likely an old time miner, maybe chinese maybe not, I think that because it looks more likely due to the timber and gravel wash about the body, maybe the poor bugger might have been buried alive.
I dont know if its aboriginal tradition Australia wide but I do know the aboriginals here in WA who populated the Perth and Swan river areas used to bury their dead on their backs with one knee raised, I know this as when I was a kid we watched some people, from the museum possibly, carefully uncovering aboriginal remains that were found when some bushland along the Swan river was being prepared for a building site.
The photos you have appear to me as if the person is lying face down, although of course I cant be certain, if this is the case it would seem consistant with someone being pushed face down when the load of dirt above them collapsed while they were working, like someone digging away in a tunnel as earlier suggested.
Anyway it would be of interest to someone thats for sure, and I would let them know as soon as, because more heavy rain may make it harder to recover and some valuable evidence may be lost.
Thanks for sharing that with us.
cheers

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
I tend not to think aboriginal. Aboriginals for the most part had communial burial grounds. Although it does happen, it's quite rare to find one solitary grave

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
Mick, good find. Did you pick up any signals on the grave site? If there are nails metal etc at least you would know its not aboriginal. (im not saying you should dig any signal out).

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
Thats very interesting Mick. It makes you wonder how many we walk over in the bush without knowing eh?
You say that one picture was taken "A pic of grave looking from top of gully". It looks as if you took the photo while you were standing on the floor of the gully, looking across at it. Is it roughly 6 foot deep?
What state of Aust did you find it?
Thanks for sharing it. Facinating!
Cheers

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
Hi,
Tributer, out of respect i did`t wave the wond over the remains.
Curley, the pic was taken from the other bank of gully, ZOOMED in. As i said in first post the bank has fallen away from exsiting ground level. original ground level to top of remains would be about 1.2 M, gully would be about 3.5 m deep.

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
good day All.
I think I would report to the police as they could be 1 of thousands of people who go missing each year, & I would wave the wand over him incase he has a horde of gold in a bag near him.
Cheers Greg

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
Another possibilty could be that it was a old timer who was tunnelling into a bank and it colapsed burying him/her alive or caught in a hole when the gully flashed flooded.
Have heard of this before and if they were a lone prospector quite possiable.
But regardless of how they came to be there a very interesting find, as for the cops being informed your call.
Regards
John

Re: OLD GRAVE IN GULLY
Close off the entire area with lots of pretty blue and white tape. Spend thousands of dollars of tax payers money..man hours, DNA tests etc.. inform media because it's been a slow week and nothing else to report.dave1963 wrote:What are the cops going to do.

Three months later release another statement to the media saying remains are of a chinese male aged between 19 and 30 years old and have been there for aproximately 150 years...no signs of foul play.
Greenies get in on it saying it's a historical site yada yada yada... Peter Garrett stick his ugly skeleton resembling cranium in trying to save face after the home insulation scandal, area now closed to detecting, bush walking, 4wheel driving, harpooning of whales etc..etc....

Hi NSEW;
That is some amazing find, obviously with its own mysterious background,as to how he got there.
Anyhow,I've always said to my self,as i get older, I hope to have at least one original tooth left, you know, just to be able to grab that piece of steak before I pass away.
Happy Prospecting
