Because they have no adjustable ground balance your best bet at finding a nugget would be some where the ground is quiet like Tibooburra .
Good LUck

Quite a good little detector for the price and I have found coins beneath some hefty granit rocks with mine. The GB seems to be able to get through some mild hot rock but not Iron stone. it is worth a try in the gold fields but you will be limited to largish nuggs, coins and relics just a few inches down in tough ground.
I have used a lot of detectors and find the Compadre to be a pleasant change from high tech detectors and if you use it for coins, jewellery and relics in mild ground you will have a lot of fun.
My Compadre finds all of the coins in my test patch at 8 inches except for the Aussie 5 cent*(No sig)
The detector looks like a toy but is far from it and works well.
If you are unsure of the ground conditions then place a coin on the surface and see at what hight above the ground that the detector can still respond to it withought blanking out. if the detector responds to a coin at 5 or six inches above the target but goes quiet at just an inch away then the GB is struggling and you will need to sweep the coil a few inches above the ground.

Great starter !
The Tesoro Compadre is part of my arsenal of detectors..also Tesoro Lobo, and Tejon. The Compadre is a great detector..has a lot of advantages. First is its weight, second it's sensitivity to detect small items. It can detect the tip or end of a paper staple air test at three inches!. Although the coil is not interchangeable it has advantages in trashy areas. It is a great starter detector and does a good job on coins and relics. One thing I found amazing is it's ability to the detect small earrings. If you ever upgrade, try out the Tesoro Lobo for nugget-hunting, I have found many pieces of gold with it. I find it does well in the moderate soils of California..and had proven itself to me and paid itself off on the second day. With a life time warranty you can't go wrong. Good Luck !

Hi Relichunter ,
I see you sell Tesoro detectors , shame your dealership agreement won't allow you to sell direct to Australia .
Second hand units may be OK ?
I've been a Tesoro fan for many years but few used one's come up for sale here
Have you ever tried out a Diablo Umax ?
Cheers

Re: any gold with Tesoro compadre?
Hi Jack,
I have not used the Diablo Umax, although the Silver Umax is a fine machine for coins and relics. I do deal in Tesoro and Whites..but the most important part to hunting regardless of brand is learning your machine. Most of the top brands are comparable to each other if you compare price to price. Tesoro has an incredible warranty, making the Lobo a popular brand for nugget hunting in my area. Second hand units are fine, if in good condition.

Thanks for your reply Relichunter ,
I'd prefer the original Lobo , this is why ~ I don't trust auto ground tracking because if you get a faint signal the first thing you do is stop & wave the coil over it with shorter & shorter movements , the auto tracking can be fooled into nulling out that signal thinking it just mineralisation so it goes away .
Consider letting us know the second hand units you get for sale good luck with your hunting over there .

Re: any gold with Tesoro compadre?
I have had my LST for quite a while now and I find it is reluctant to tune out gold unless it is down around the 0.1g mark.
Yes if the gold is in a hot rock then the sig from the gold may disappear when the hot rock tunes out but often there is a slight blip still heard from the gold.
I wrote a field test on the LST back in Nov 2000 AGG&T. One of my fist attempts at Feild Testing
