Out & about swinging @ Mt. C. with a HandHeld CB radio ?
Hey Guys
I was thinking about buying a handheld CB radio
Anyone got one they have used in hilly terrain ?
From what I have read they are only useful in line of sight situations !!!
I have be going to Mt Crawford SA initially & I have been taking my cell, but it does not get any service, would I be better off with a CB ???
TIA

Hi sa.newbie,
Back in the days when we used to have 27MHz CB radios, the waves used to bounce off the clouds etc and we used to go out far. I even had a chat to a bloke in the USA once or twice. These days with UHF the radios are really only line of site with about 5kms range. If you're in a gully and so is your mate and there is a hill between you, even if you're only 1km apart, you will have trouble talking. They're great car to car and close range incase you wander and get lost, but you wont talk to the Mrs back at home with them....unless you are close to a repeater and are using it.
Cheers

Totally agree with CostasDee. I have a pair of them, and they're handy if there's a couple of you working the same area. I also carry an eTrax, which is for logging your positions. If you get lost you can backtrack your movements. It relies on satellite ... so is pretty good 95% of the time.
I'm guessing you are more interested in getting assistance if you're in trouble and on your own?

Hi SA Newbie,
Are you still around the forum? I am from SA and new to this hobby too - am thinking about Mt Crawford as a beginning spot. Would like to hear from you if you are still active here?

Tony, don't hold your breath too long pal, he hasn't logged in since 13 Feb this year. Maybe his missus didn't like his Valentine's Day gift???
