What's wrong with one of the newer mobile phones? Just make sure you turn off the GPS facility when not required, for security sake. Mine is accurate to within 5m

Re: A good starter handheld gps
I agree with Pistonbroke, the garmin is easy to use, just punch in a way point when you get out of the car and if you get lost it will guide you back,
heres a tip....I switch mine off after i mark a way point to conserve the battery and switch it back on if i need to get to a certain waypoint, cheers

Re: A good starter handheld gps
I'm looking at the moment and came across the following site
http://shop.retrevo.com/m/search/byfilter?c=1015&ot=852&qf=GPS%20with%20Long%20Battery%20Life
It doesn't give real-life users experience in the wild, but gives the tecko's a good view to where the device sits in the food chain for costs/features...

Re: A good starter handheld gps
Yep the Garmin Etrex 10 is a good little unit, basic monochrome screen without the bells and whistles but does a good job. At $79 it's a steal and if something stuffs up or you lose/break it you won't be crying over it. Bought mine at Dick Stiffs 3 months ago for $130 and thought that was good, damn.

Yep I posted about this yesterday about the special price.
I also took the advice of sandy 2010 and purchased another today. So I have 2 which will use 1 for backup.
Those that can not get to a JBHI FI Shop you can purchase these online.
The link is below. These are easy to use. Spent an hour playing and moving icons until I was satisfied.
You could buy 2 for the price you would normally buy 1 and do as I have and keep one as a backup just in case one fails.
