Hello all members!
Hello all members!
I must say i am a complete newbie?
I have no idea on where to start in gold detecting / prospecting!
Would like to purchase a detector, ( limited funds ), contemplating maybe a cheaper VLF, for coins / relics / some gold nuggets.
Victorian based in South East suburbs.
Is the golden triangle still suited to beginners & detecting?
Are there many panning / sluicing options in Victoria or should i be looking further a field, WA, NSW & Qld?

Hi slagheap and welcome to the forum.
You are on right place for a start.Plenty post/topics to explore/read and study.
Lot of members who can help and lot of knowledge to pass on.
For a start you will need a Miners right for using detector in Victoria. You can start here:
https://checkout.payments.com.au/dpi_minersRight/
For a type of detectors depend of funds you have but go for the best one you can afford.
Minelabs are most suitable for our conditions here.
Prospecting guide you can download here:
http://www.dpi.vic.gov.au/earth-resources/exploration-and-mining/prospecting-and-fossicking/prospecting-guide
Golden triangle was named that for a reason.Thousands people visit it on a weekly basis so join the club.
That is the best thing to do: join a detecting club.plenty experienced people and most of them have monthly detecting trip to get hands on experience.
Book a day detecting and training which will save you years of try to learn on your own.
I did one day training with these guys - had a great time and i found a nugget as well.Great people:

Dont forget to check this as well:

Will leave others to add more info.
Dont be afraid to ask any questions.
Good Luck

Thinking of heading to Sovereign Hill this weekend with my brothers family!
The kids are wanting to have a go at gold panning in the creek, i want to do the mine tour!
I guess its my first lesson on the diggings!
