Leonora area
Hi all,
I am a new member, and an apprentice prospector,my gold cherry is yet to be popped im up for some holidays in a week and being a Kalgoorlie local i was thinking of heading north to Leonora, maybe Laverton..up to Leinster(where i grew up)across to Sandstone,Meeka etc etc.
now i dont expect a bloody x marks the spot..but i would really appreciate some info on general areas to try,or what i should be looking out for(laterite caps etc) as i really have no idea apart from areas like murrin murrin, specking patch(ML?)where else should i try?
ive been scanning google earth(tenements overlayed) for likely(legal)areas to try,and they sure are few and far between!
have the pro's got any advice for noob?

Re: Leonora area
thought i might be asking too much
anyway i got a hold of Doug Stone's book :metal detecting for gold and relics in Australia
and even though alot of areas on the mud maps are under ML's there are a few that are pending,so i would recommend this book to any noob!!
nobody is gonna help you!! thats just the way it is i guess.

Hello Goldleaf,
Barely 1 1/2 days after your first post you seem a little peeved that you don't have the info you need.
Majority of prospectors are away from their computers at this time of the year.
There is a lot of info on this site if YOU take the time to read & research, feel sure you will find some valuable help for someone starting out.
There is still a lot of gold out there but it is not uncommon for the experienced to go days weeks without finding any.
Think about it!
Peter

Leonora area
Hi goldreef.......LOL
I heard on the grapevine that Laverton is the "flavour of the month".....with good gold coming out of there.
Watch out for the wild camels(it's the male that comes on heat)......don't wear headphones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*****Remember the prospectors motto.....SLOW, SLOWER, SLOWEST.
Be lucky.

Wild Camels
The solution for them is if you are with the missus is shoot her in the foot and she can be the target for the bull camels and you should be right LOL

Re: Leonora area
haha,nice one hanson,
anyway, did the trip and found not a single gram!
i probably rushed it a bit but ya get that.
laverton was pretty good, was interesting going back into town as i lived in laverton when i was a young fella.
hawks nest was a nice spot but is pretty popular with...EVERYONE,saw at least 20 other prospecters out there over a couple of days lol.
went to sandstone and meeka aswell, found many, many holes and chainmarks, and when going over i seemed to find the bits of junk left behind lol...no yellow.
still trying to learn how to locate them patch's on my own research.....ill admit,it is harder than i thought it would be,but after 3 months i think im starting to read the geo maps a little better.
also the tips provided by all on these forums is great.
later...

LEONORA AREA
Haven't been to Laverton, but couple of years ago was on holidays with my wife and tried a few spots up that way east of Menzies - nil, Kookynie - nil, Leonora - a couple of small bits about 3 grams each and met a pensioner couple hubby was disabled and wife detecting with a toy detector, needless to say she got zilch so I gave her one of small nuggets and they were happy like a pig in ****.
Hope to head off in September to have a bludge and wave the magic wand again cheers all

Re: Leonora area
Having just come back from those areas, a couple of things that you have to keep in mind.
1. Mining leases. The mines take the leases over the best ground, so go to the mining company and get permission to detect on their land.
2. Mines. This is where they found gold, so you will always find some gold around them although there is alot of rubbish around.
3. Active areas. This is where peope have been before so like at Hawkes Nest a lot of the easy gold is gone. However if you go to the edges of these areas you find gold as well.
