Last weekend at Secret Creek
Gday peoples,
Went out to Secret Creek last weekend with a mate, via Hidden Valley
Friday night greeted us with Gale force winds and light rain, perfect detecting weather! It was that cold and wet we decided to just crash in the Car instead of rolling out the Swags, plus the wind was so strong it would have blown the fire away anyway.
After a quick kip,Bacon and Eggs +Coffee at 4am and a roaring fire to warm the bones,we were under way.
Walking in the dark is so much easier on the body, probably because the big hills dont seem so steep when you cant see them, and you really only concentrate on the headlamp beam infront of you. Arriving at Secret Creek well before sun up,we sat it out under a big Gum as light rain squalls drifted through. The hands were fairly numb and the nose was runny, gotta love this winter weather.
All fired up,we hit it hard as soon as we could see,but the first few hrs only produced a couple of little ones each.
Time for a change of stratergy.......
We agreed that it was time to search some of the ground there we had dismissed before. I walked up a side creek where I had got 4 bits a while back, but produced nothing else with a big Coil. There was plenty of test holes and a few patches of surfacing up here,so the old blokes must have found something worth while.
The next hr saw the rain getting heavier,to the point I was nearly headed back to the backpack to put a plastic shopping bag over the control box,but I stuck it out.
I walked down onto a flat next to the creek, and hard up against a Blackberry bush pinged a real small bit, very shallow in virgin wash. Spun around and got a second not 2 steps away. There were a few very shallow test holes above me,maybe 6 inches deep and full of grass.
Walke just above the holes and pinged another, then not 6 inches away another. They seemed to be in a Orange-grey clay with a few hot rocks about. Then it started....I bearly moved a meter for the next hr. It was a nugget,a hot rock,an nugget and so on. They were only tiny bits but a good buzz to be on a fresh patch again. Some of the bits in the wash were so small I couldnt get them in the sieve,so I just filled in the hole and moved on. I ended up with 18 pieces in about 2 hrs, with a total of 25 for the day.
Its amazing how the cold disapears when your onto gold, even if it is only small.
The biggest bit was just over a gram, second biggest going .4
The second day wasnt as good, but I picked up a few stragglers that I had missed the day before so I wasnt complaining. All up a great weekend even if the weather Gods werent on our side.

Great work Gus, funny how you don't feel the cold when your finding gold, or was it all the digging?

Re: Last weekend at Secret Creek
Hey Gus,
what a great way to spend a weekend and finding a patch on a miserable couple of days. It sure would have taken the pain away keeping busy digging.
Cheers,
Uncle Bob

Re: Last week end at secret creek
Great story and very nice gold there Gus. I know what you mean about the pain and cold going away when your onto the gold like that. It does the same for me too... congrats on your finds and hope there's plenty more there for you on your next trip...
Cheers.

Re: Last weekend at Secret Creek
Thanks everyone,
Sorry for the late reply as I am unable to log on to this site from my home computer or my mobile for some strange reason.
It was a lucky weekend for me,but anyone using anything from a GP Extreme up would of got that gold.
This spot has a habit of producing golden holes in the Slate. It will generally start with 1 bigger bit as the indicator, say a 2 grammer, then as the ground is removed the smaller pieces start to come into detecting range.
Im sure that the 3 x 3 mtr patch will produce more if I remove 6 inches of dirt, and I reckon I would be nuts not to pan that stuff off as there would be alot of tiny bits there.
Hopefully there is a few bigger bits at depth there that the Coiltek 10 x 5 Joey Mono missed,as the ground is still very Buzzy and the tussock grass stops the coil from being hard against the dirt.

Re: Last weekend at Secret Creek
Dear Gus, RIP IT UP! Err, in an environmentally friendly (also eco-friendly, nature friendly, and green) sort of way I mean. And don't forget to replant ten native species for every one that you put the rake and pick to. Last of all, replace the insects that you might harm, as you know a butterfly flapping it's wings at the other end of the world eventually affects all of us. Harry

Re: Last weekend at Secret Creek
I dont know Harry,i dont reckon the Cockie would be too keen on me doing major earthworks, even though He is a great Bloke
What if an Inch Ant bit me on the bum here, would there be an earthquake in Europe?
Your not wrong about the Joey LBG,its my best mate, apart from my Wifey ( just incase she is reading this )
Its always in my backpack if its not on the end of my Tecta.
Some of the nuggets it sniffs out are barely a pause in the threshold, amazing piece of equipment.
