First ever piece
Gday all, I'm new to detecting and new to the forum.
For years I have wanted a detector but have never been able to afford one.
About 9 months ago I started a new job and met a bloke who is an extremely keen prospector, after seeing some of his finds and interigating him day in and day out with every question i could think of about prospecting I had a rough idea of what model I wanted to get.
About 3 months ago I sold my motorbike and with some of the money, purchased myself a second-hand GP Extreme. The first 10-15 outing produced nothing but rubbish and .22 bullets. Then one day i stumbled across an old open cut mine and thought I would try my luck. Within 5 minutes I had unearthed a token dated 1854 "Sir Charles Hotham". Not gold but still a good find to me. Thinking that i was onto a good spot i spent a few more hours searching only to find nothing more than 302 rounds and an old button. I have since been back 3 times and have found another button and and old hair piece, nothing else.
A week and a half ago i thought I would try my luck at night being a full moon. But before I could head out to my chosen spot I had to help a friend whom had locked her keys in her car. By the time I had done that and had a beer and a chat the night was getting on and it was 11:30pm! Thinking "i better do this quick" I decided not to go my chosen spot but to go somewhere a tad closer. I left my friends house and headed up a dirt road, noticing the moonlight lighting up a paddock I decided to stop there as I had been given permision a month before hand to go on the property. I set up my detector and jumped the fence, i found the usual little pieces of rubbish before comming across a faint yet sweet sounding target. After digging for about 20 minutes through what felt like solid rock it started to rain. Thirsty and sweaty I headed back to car for some shelter, as I quickly walked waving my coil vigorously I heard quick, quite but sharp sound. Thinking to my self "stuff it why not" I quickly started digging. After digging through about 2 inches of extremely hard ground out popped a chunk of clay, I waved the coil over the hole... Nothing. Then over the clay and there was my target, as i singled it down to a small chunk in my palm I saw a slight glitter under the moon light, "could it be?!" Shaking I put it into my mouth and had a good suck then pulled out this beautiful little nugget. Finaly! Some gold! I continued searching the paddock until the rain got extremely at 3:30 and had to give it away. Even though I only found one piece I went home a very happy man. It weighed in at 1.19 grams
I will put pics up asap!
Sorry for the novel
Happy hunting!

Re: First ever piece
G'day Nuggsy & welcome to the forum
Thanks for your story and how you found your first piece, I also started with a GPextreme, they are a good machine. Look forward to seeing a picture of your first gold nugget, and by the way that token was a good find as well, you might like to put up a picture of it as well.
cheers dave

Re: First ever piece
Hi Nuggsy,
Welcome to the forum and well done on your first nugget. Cannot wait to see the pic.
Aldi sell a great little electric cleaner For watches and rings that works a treat on the gold, really brings it up well. Would suggest getting one for all that gold you are about to find.
Good luck and look forward to many many more
Peter

Well done Nuggsy nice finds mate. It is a good feeling finding your first nugget and one you will never for get.
You have a nice token, but that hair piece, I don't think it is a hair piece. It could be more of a belt buckle of some sort. The 3 prongs at the bottom bite into webbing or leather. Also most hair piece were made out of thin brass or silver and this one looks like steel going rusty, but I could be wrong without seeing it.
