Finally Finished

Hi Guys, Apart from Gold detecting I've been building a camper trailer just for camping out when I go gold detecting, I'm doing a WA trip in May so I purpose built this camper for our big trip Its made from a Toyota Hilux tub from my car, Hope you like it

What a **** hot looking unit mate, i've seen a few over the years but that rig of you rs takes the cake mate.

All you are missing is the AC for WA as us Vic travelers hate that WA heat.

Thanks Guys, I went and did a TIG welding course for 4 nights and watched lots of youtube's on aluminum welding, and made a bending tool/sheet metal brake, Its taking me over a year to build (gold detecting got in the way ) and l just about finished it, just needs curtains and a few tweaks. it weighs 740kgs empty and can handle 1200kgs loaded.

Great job Hobo very professional looking. You were saying that you are planning to go over to WA this year. Are you planning to go off road? If so is your unit dust proof, as the dust will get into every thing. One way to stop the dust from getting inside the sleeping area is to pressurise the cabbin, and the way to do it is to have an air intake flap at the front top section of your canopy. If you are not quite sure what I mean, go and have a look at the latest caravans most of them have this set up. It stops the dust from getting in when driving by letting air in through the vent and pressurising the cabbin and stops the dust from entering. It a great idea and you will be glad that you put one in.

Nice simple set-up.
A word on the solar panel, especially if you want to run a fridge.
Have them so you can take them off the roof on a lead.
You will be able to aim them at the sun easier without having to move camp. Also might let you park in the shade.

I agree with keeping the inside of the trailer positive pressure with the aid of a roof duct for sure..... keeps everything dust free and is a good tip.
The only other thing I would do is make sure you have a couple of 2" holes , one at each end , of your front box to let any gas leakage out... you would be amazed at how little gas it takes to make a serious explosion, and having the electrics in there as well will add to the chances of things going amiss....... Remembering that gas is heavier than air and will "pool" in the bottom of the box.

Just dont get a rotary vent as they such the air out of the trailer which will suck all the dust in via any leak in the door seals...

Maybe Wombat can elaborate on the forced air intake. a "rubber" boat scupper could do the job also!

Great job there!! As a couple of the guys have said, a vent is critical to keep the dust out. I've got the same sort of canopy on my ute and cut a vent into the glass top and it works beautifully. Don't use the vent you pictured. Go to a cvan parts shop or the net and get a snap down type of vent that you simply pop open by hand when travelling on gravel. Set it to one side on top so it's easy to open and have it facing forward when open to catch the inflow. They run to about $30.

Good job, about the only thing I would suggest is a full length slide out tray under the bed as this will make it much easier to access the stuff you store under there, have you got some way of sealing the bed area from bug's & mozzie's when the tailgate is open? the only other thing is consider a fire extinguisher mounted inside so you can reach it from the bed & from the window.

Hobo mate the vent I was talking about is the one that Mulgadansa suggested they are the same as what is used in most caravans to pressurise the van when traveling. If you get a chance to go to a caravan dealer you will see the type that I've recommended.
