little big hole
g'day all, i was just wondering do you think this was dug by hand because it doesn't look like you could get big machines down there?
p.s if you look closely you can see it has taken a victim it looks like a donkey or camel poor thing

Re: little big hole
BC, The left hand side is a ramp to remove material out via machinary.
Most open cuts of this size are usually always dug out with machinary and explosives.

Re: little big hole
Do you think it is an old hole,it's not very big i am thinking they would have used old machinery to do it? It's small compared to this one i found

Re: little big hole
It's obviously been erroded with water over time, but compare it to pictures of active open cuts and you will see a lot of the same features.
E.g The ramp leveling and roads so the material can be removed after charges have been fired.
Mine sites that are not maintained deteriorate faster

Re: little big hole
BC this depends on a few things.
This area may have been dug down to bed rock, depending on it's composition the water finds it hard to penerate and instead pools like what we see in the pilbara at billabongs.
Alternativly the water table may also be low in this area and the mine has flooded and then became unviable.

Re: little big hole
The Super pit sure is something hey!
The one we have is big but not that big.
The old miners had shafts down as far as 1500mts deep. Some of the old shafts can be seen in the sides of the Super pit.
Pore horse/camel/donkey thing not a good way to go!

See in the far side the little black holes there old shafts,
Nope never seen the donkey thing
And just talked to dispatch and our pit here at Cadia is deeper the Super pit was 500-550m deep 3.5km long 1.5km wide, when this pic was taken.
Our pit is 630m deep as of today 2km from S.W too N.E & 1.3km from N.W too S.E its a rather nice little hole..
Google Map, Cadia NSW and have a look they just got some new photos done
I'm in the office just below the tails thickeners off the concentrators & above that little pond, look I'm waving
Hope the pic's work!
Cheers Hoff,
