deep settings for the 5000 Empty deep settings for the 5000

Post  au79 Thu Oct 20, 2011 5:53 pm

G'day all i am wondering if there is anyone out there that has some good deep settings for the 5000 that they want to share I have an area to try and thought i might ask on here for some different ideas on some settings.I have got a nice two ounce bit from the area that was just under 18 inches deep and 12 grams in small ones.I have a 25 inch NF advantage coil i have just spent $550 on hopfully that might give me an edge. The ground is reasonably quiet, loamy, and its 3 foot before you start getting into the wash dirt and gets deeper, could be big things down there.Cheers au79 pirat

If using Normal timings in combo with a large Mono coil then keep the Gain around the 11 mark, also it is OK to use Tracking in this Timing but preferably the Medium Speed option. Deep audio in the audio filters will also lift the response on larger deeper pieces and in some cases I've found a more pronounced lift in the response using the Very Slow Motion filter but you have to have a very precise coil sweep speed along with keeping the coil as parallel with the ground as possible.

Keep in Mind any ground noise at a given location has the potential to mask a good target even in quietish soils, so it would pay to go over the same ground using the Normal Timings and also Enhance using Fixed GB. I prefer Enhance on the 5000 over Fine Gold when using Large 'Round' Monoloop coils 16" and up as I have proven on a number occasions that Enhance will generate a more recognisable response over Fine Gold with the larger coils.

Hope this helps,

Hi JP,
a kind of goofy question; would that recommendation also apply to a 17" NFA elip. coil?
It's half a large coil...

All the best,

Hello Flak, yes and no. Firstly a 17" ellip is better suited for the Fine Gold Timings for signal response on all target sizes in highly mineralised ground however if the ground is not mineralised so much then yes the settings will work fine with them or even perhaps going to Sensitive Xtra which is the Normal variant of Fine Gold (better sensitivity to small targets).

Generally I bump the Gain up to around 13 to 14 when using Enhance or Fine Gold, as most people know by now the Smooth type timings remove a lot of ground signal but in the process there is some reduction in signal response on good targets, elevating the Gain slightly helps compensate for some of this so long as the extra noise created does not counteract the gains made in the signal response (basically speaking you need to find a balance between the two).

Hope this helps,

JP
