no sound from extreme
Hi guys, just a quick question here.
I had an external speaker set up from the detector to my harness. The speaker had issues with the pot ( the volume knob adjuster). In a fit of rage i may have hit it against a rock several times before cooling down enough to actually try to fix it properly.
It did work for a day after my bush mechanic repair, lol.
I decided to drive to town for a set of headphones and bypass the external speaker set up.
When i plug my headphones into the battery i get absolutely no noise. I have tried 3 sets of head phones and 2 different 6.5mm jacks.
I have 12 v in my bungy on 2 pins and no ohms res on the other 2.
Could this be a faulty detector amp causing this issue?
I still do get good sound from the repaired external speaker if i tap it lightly.
I have ordered a new battery pack and external speaker, and wondering if i should send the detector away while i am waiting for my other parts to arrive..
The plug inside the battery cover seems ok where the 6.5 mm plug goes in.
Should the terminals inside the battery cover have any voltage at the speaker points?
Cheers in advance if you have had this issue and know how to resolve it. At this point of time i am hoping the new speaker set up will will the issue to get me thru the holidays, and then i will send it off to minelab anyway for a check up..

Re: no sound from extreme
LMAO, If someone was videoing me it would have been a winner on any home vid show.
The grabbing the harness just after that and ripping it off like the incredible hulk would have been gold to watch.
P.S i need a new harness aswell...lol
My frustration came from the thick scrub, and the curly cord getting caught up on it and all the other wires etc, the heat, the scratches, the losing my new 2ways in the bush, not to mention walking around 10 hours a day for a week for no result, and seeing other guys pull nugs out around me..
So with a camelbac and wireless battery and external speaker, mounted on the detector set up i should be down a level or 2 on the stressometer.
I cant wait to get back out there ASAP...
Gotta love the sport of hunting gold, its so hard yet so rewarding..
And the things you see amaze you aswell, like a fox actually stalking Bullant, and it had a go at 2bit aswell.
The snake skin from a brown that you could use as a duffle bag, echidnas, foxes, feral kittens, goanas, sheep, cows, etc etc.. And all the old mines that would have been so backbreaking to dig many moons ago..
I have only been home a few hours and itching to get a nana nap and get back out there..

Re: no sound from extreme
Goodday all.
I had the same problem from my xtreme, so I borrowed a new lead & still no sound so I sent mechine to minelab & they couldn"t fault it. it was my unlucky Lark booster & speaker. & my new coilteck power cable. Cost $75. to find out, got new cables & unlucky lark fixed & went out again but the unlucky lark died again. so I had to use my head phones.
Cheers Greg

Re: no sound from extreme
Cheers Greg, my problem is i also have no sound with the headphones. Maybe it is a cable aswell. I have looked at the ends etc and checked the solder joints but it all seems ok.
maybe its a combination of the cable and my external speaker. I have resoldered a new pot into it, but its still very hard to hear.

Hi Maka
You could check the solder connections at the back of the sockets inside the battery cover.

Re: no sound from extreme
Gday Maka,
sometimes the curley powerleads fail internally and not at the soldered ends. It has happened to a mate of mine with his Extreme a few times. It could be the wire carrying the sound signal from the detector to the headphone jack that has the prob.
Allways carry a few spare power leads and at least 1 set of spare headphones.

Re: no sound from extreme
Thanks for the replies.
I wish i could try another curly lead, but i have now sent it to minelab for checking.
I was just told the minelab wait for repairs may be as long as 12 weeks !!!!
Has anyone hear this rumor?
If its going to be 3 months i will get it shipped back and get it modded.
Other forums say turn around is only normally a week. hope its only a week or less.

Gday Maka
sounds like a break in the curled part of the curly lead to me.
Minelab repair turn around is usually no more than 2 weeks at the most.

Maka,
I sent GP3500 from Noosa Qld to Minelab on 16th last and received it back fixed on Wednesday 21st, that is 5 days total. I think someone is trying to worry you with the long perioud quoted.

Re: no sound from extreme
Hi Maka, I'm just South of Brissie & I sent my 5000 down to Minelab for a checkup about 2 weeks ago. I got it back just over a week after I sent it having been checked over & given clean bill of health - I couldn't believe it Most impressed, but then I've always had good service from them.
Cheers, Andy

G'day Maka,
Now that you have mentioned the "M" word, your detector should be back to you tomorrow all fixed up!!
Don't forget, once somebody other than ML works on your detector, you will never be able to send it back to them in the future for repair.
It could have been the curly lead. The wires used for the audio are normally smaller/lighter than the power wires. Occasionally these leads need to be shortened a little to keep them in good working order. One of the audio wires may have failed and this would be the reason the speaker went quiet as the booster was only getting half of the audio signal.
Cheers Mick

I have a suggestion, re curly cords.
Mrs C has a problem with her spine that makes wearing a backpack/battery combo impossible.
To over come this I have done the following....she runs an ML SD 2100 by the way.
I have mounted a Coiltek Regulated supply to the control box and mounted Coiltek Speaker along side it all on shortened leads....This has made trailing leads of any sort from the operator to the machine obsolete.
She has a light nylon webbing belt / shoulder strap harness which she attaches her bungy to, apart from this there is no problem with snagging in the bush and if there is a need to dig or just take a break she simply unhooks the bungy and can walk away from the detector in seconds. Since this set up she is able to remain involved with this hobby and not sit in the car reading (getting bored) while I go out to play.
I have tried this set up on my GP Extreme (when she was not looking) and when I can spare a few dollars will be doing the same for myself.
Imagine how much more you can carry on your Belt/Backpack without the burden of a thumping great battery attached.....you can also carry a spare battery for the regulated supply in your shirt pocket for later in the day...(the ML Extreme harness battery pocket will hold 3 cans of Fosters/your choice to accelerate dehydration...knock off early .... listen to grand final)
Cheers Cranky (the original)

Re: no sound from extreme
My camcorder batteries, external speaker turned up today, total weight 100 grams. And about the size of 4 matchboxes..
Wooot no more feeling like a puppet on strings.
Cant wait to get my machine back to have a play..
Theres stickers on my extreme like its been worked on before, hopefully by minelab.
On one of the PCB's inside i could see a replaced chip. It was silver when the rest of the board was white.
