Pine Creek NT prospecting
Hi all,
Was just wondering if anyone on this forum has done any prospecting (with or without the GPX 5000) around the pine creek NT area? I'm new to this addictive hobby and keen to try my luck, just curious how you went, if attempted at all?
Cheers

Re: Pine Creek NT prospecting
Hi buzzdog, my partner and I went to Pine Creek 5 years ago, a bit of a change from our usual North Qld forays. It wasn't country we understood - not like WA gold country, or Georgetown, Clermont or Golden Triangle. The country we walked, anyway. There is gold there, but we never found any. It was an interesting experience, but there was a lot of ground that had knee high (tall knees, at that) grass, and you couldn't detect what seemed to be good ground. Didn't know what was making the rustling noises in the grass around about, either. But there was other ground that looked the goods. We had permission to detect on ground that had produced gold and was under lease by "Dave from Darwin" (from the Finders Forum). Think he's still on that forum - but don't know (this forum is "nicer"). He was very amenable., and I reckon he would be happy to give you a heads up. It is definitely worth a more positive go than we gave it (camped on a wild brumby reserve, and was pretty awesome just from that aspect). Go for it, and get the gold we didn't have the right frame of mind to find, because it is there, somewhere

Evening Keepdigging,
Cheers for posting a reply, yes the area certainly has tall grass (especially during the wet season) which makes for walking let alone detecting difficult. Lucky for us they've recently burnt off majority of the area up there. As you did in the past, I've got permission to prospect on a friends property, which doubles as a great place to camp as it's close to a creek. I've only been out there twice and haven't had much luck with the detector...that said I'm still learning to use my 5000 and at present I think I may be having issues with it. I can't really pinpoint whether it's me with settings, EMI or the unit itself? My detector seems to make a constant wailing sound with almost a morse code sound and no matter how much I adjust my threshold or other settings, these sounds still remain? Any who...I have found some pretty awesome clear and slightly purple quartz crystals out there....I guess perservirance is the key. I'm glad I only live an hour away, otherwise it could be a very long trip for nothing?
Cheers

Re: Pine Creek NT prospecting
No worries Buzz. Will spend some time later today looking for our Pine Creek topographical to pinpoint/name an area where a 20oz'er was found. Will send details in a PM. But hey, the gold is in different spots all around, you just have to do the walk. We never even made it to the western side of the highway, and there was a lot of good looking ground there, if I remember.
As for your detector problems, I can't give you much, sorry. Not a 5000 owner. In "the olden days" - all of '95 up til relatively recent, it was all about staying clear of power lines, but that's not a problem now (shouldn't be, anyway). You might have to talk to Minelab or do some online googling to see what you may find about that. Too much money invested in the machine for it not to work. good luck - as said, pm later some of the names we were advised/found out about...just in case you run out of ground!

As Keepdigging said, "Dave from Darwin " is a good bloke to contact, as he has a few leases scattered around up there. Went on one a few years ago & managed to find a few nuggets.

Hi Keepdigging,
Thanks heaps for that!
Just to re-assure you, I'm not one to try and take someone else's hard earned spots, just one who needs a little direction on what to look for and where to start looking. At the same token I really appreciate the offer and keen to see what's out there.
Cheers once again

Evening Gef50,
No sorry, my name is Robert Busby.
In response to your earlier post, it would be awesome to meet up with a fellow prospector within the pine creek area, it would be great to see how someone with experience does it.
When your coming down next and if you're keen and willing, let us know and we could meet up for a day?
Cheers

Evening Geronimo Reilly,
By the sounds of it, Dave from Darwin seems to be a man in the know, would be great to meet up with him one day for a chat. Do you come down this way often or do you head out abroad?

If you want to contact Dave in Darwin, go onto finders forum. I used to have his number but lost it.

No worries keepdigging, I'll let you know how I go.
I'm starting to make some contacts in the area, that coupled with some highly detailed topo mapes of area, I'm sure I'll be able to fine something to convince the misses that my latest purchase of the 5000 was worth it....hahahah
