best coil for extreme
Howdy. Just chasing some info on the best coil for small nugs in high mineral ground mainly rocky creek beds ( small coil maybe?)using an extreme.
Also a coil to suit salt/ beach work.
Someone did tell me , but i cant find the post anywhere.
Cheers in advance for any replies..

Re: best coil for extreme
Hi Maka,
I have heard from several people that the Coiltek 14" DD pro 'Elite' is the allround coil of choice. The other piece of advice I have received is don't under estimate ye old 11" DD coil.
Here's a link to the question I asked regarding coils:

Welcome to the 'Extreme Club', we may be out numbered but were far from being out gunned!

Re: best coil for extreme
Sorry to hijack ya thread. I'm running
a 3000. I've got a little Joey mono. Just wondering if it's worth getting a dd as well? Do most peeps run dd's on the GP models because they can't handle mineralization as well?

Hi nugs,
I will state now that I am a 'newbie', but I have researched a hell of a lot and spoken to many people regarding coils, therefore take this with a grain of salt, so to speak. The mono's should run well and from what I can gather, the poor DD's are gathering dust since the Monos came out. Personally, I have used a mono coil on a 3000 once. I only own DD's (for the moment) and I find they're very stable in the hot ground surrounding my area. I have found a patch of ground that can even make the 11" DD unstable or 'Chattery' and when I get a chance, I will run a mono over that particular patch of ground to experiment.
From my understanding, the Mono's are more sensitive than a DD coil and that's why everyone seems to use them. Personally, I like the scouts motto - 'always be prepared'. So the next coil I purchase (a while from now) will be a Mono, therefore covering my bases.
If you haven't watched it yet, have a look at this one:

The Jonothon Porter DVD is also well worth a look as well. Both Ange and I learnt a lot from that.

Re: best coil for extreme
Cheers Pete,
I've watched the link and plan on getting JPs vid soon. Sounds like the 14 dd coiltek is a popular coil as well for the GPs. I guess it comes down to how hot the ground is I'm working!

Re: best coil for extreme
Having owned a GP Extreme i found the best coil i ran was a Coiltek 14x9 mono. Found gold down to 0.4g and a 1g piece at 6 inches.
Don't be suprised, these machines can handle mono coils as well as any other.

Re: best coil for extreme
Ok, I have just been swinging for 3 days x 10 hour days.
The issue i am having is the ground is hot. The 11dd will cope ok on 99 percent of it, but i have to run the extreme in 'E" mode ( mono mode)
to get any depth, and we only talking 3 to 4 inches on a piece of buckshot.
I tried the 350mm mono and the nugget tech 6x8ish i think it is.
They both screamed too much.
I spent hours testing tweaking, tuning, ground balancing etc.
The nugget teck coil was by far the nicest to swing and by far the most sensative, but the hot ground makes it impossible to use.
Running a magnet over the ground and its absolutely full of iron/ magnetic rocks.( about 20 on the magnet)
Some of the small hot rocks screamed like a 22 shell under the coil.
I really want to get used to the mono , but i guess its not going to happen in that area.
Is there a mono coil thats quieter on that sort of ground?
If so i will order 2 !!!!
I saw guys there with 3000 and a 4500 struggling also.
I just cant comprehend how people get sub grammers at depth in that sort of terrain.
To cut a long story short if i spend more $$$$ on a better coil is it worth my while ?
Cheers guys and gals...

Re: best coil for extreme
maka, you could spend $1000 on a coil, but unfortunately your machine will just not handle that terrain. I was in a situation like that yesterday with my 5000 and the ground was that hot i was ground balancing every 3 - 5 metres.
It's not you or the coil. it's the ground and the machine.
you said you were getting about 3 inches depth. the 4500 was probably only getting 4.
did you try running your detector in tracking mode.

Re: best coil for extreme
Hi maka
the only mono coil I ever only used on my extreme
was the 11" commander. I could work most of the
ground in central VIC with it, but then my extreme
was extremely stable.

Re: best coil for extreme
cheers guys, I have been pulling my hair out over this.
I did read today somewhere that the signal knob turned back will smooth out some ground noise.
I didnt know that, and probably didnt try it as much as i should have. I thought the signal on 100 percent was the way to go, but i will try about 80 percent and see how it works.
I tried in tracking mode and it helped a little but was scared i was missing the small bits. so kept changing it back to fixed.
Some of the small hot rocks sounded so much like a target, so if i nulled out over them, i would surely miss the small stuff.
All part of the learning curve i guess, A machine just isnt capable of balancing out the hotrocks, about pea size to marble size and millions of them and still pick up a nugget the size of a gain of rice.
Well it maybe it is, but not in my hands (yet)....
I am running on....
sensitivity ON
deep mode, where possible
volume MAX
rx Normal but works better in E mode for some weird reason.
level fully anti clockwise.
fixed where possible, and only use tracking if i have to.
it was windy, raining, and had motorbikes in close proximity aswell that didnt help.

Re: best coil for extreme
You can spend as much money as you like on coils, but it wont change the ground matrix.
Your running in deep wont help, it will boost the signal some as well as every thing else and cause the detector to moan over hot ground...better off using Normal. Deep also has a clipping effect to the threshold, from memory it takes a means of the thresh and irons out the highs & lows, and its this that causes that horrible moaning effect that chaffed my butt on the 3000.
Running it in Sensitive will again highlight the ground, use Normal here as well. Sensitive gives the detector a little edge over Normal to smaller targets, but on hot ground will complain more then Normal.
Lower your threshold as far as you can, but dont run it silent. Use a bigger DD coil 14" 16"... DD coils have inbuilt ground canceling abilities, and are just as sensitive to smaller targets close to the center axis of the coil if kept on the ground.
A mono coil on nasty ground will only pick up surface trash..as well as most of its reflected energy.
using the E or mono Switch on the 3000 while using a DD will keep much of the coils ability to cancel the ground, remember its built into the DD coil by design, so used with these settings will bring back some sensitivity to the detector lost by employing the dumbing down settings i mention.
A GPX model has the ability to lesson the above effects with its user select-ability of certain functions, along with the software that backs up the smooth class of timings where as the older models don't. At the end of the day, neither model has the ability to change the matrix of the ground.
Having did ok with the 3000 id have no problems going back to it if not having the now 4500.
Having said that, there is ground i work with the 4500 that could not be swung over with the older models no matter how good a combo you came up with..... Mind you, the 4500s depth on this ground is dismal and the gold found on it is withing 2-3".
Your level of wit plays no part in some ground, other than to say move on.

Re: best coil for extreme
Thanks much appreciated.the reason i want to work this out, is there is a patch of small nugs that have been pulled out of this area. Everyone struggles with the ground noise, and as you say " walks away" Thats where i want to walk right in and get the bounty!!!! lol...
Either that or dig up every hot rock in the area until its clear, I noticed most hot rocks are on the surface, I might use a firefighters rake, and pull away as much as i can.
It may be worth my while...
Thanks for the info, i may look at a bigger DD as opposed to another mono.
