Re: Ararat and stawell
G'day Hotrock.
Their are various places north west of Ararat, and south west and north west of Stawell itself, which are still regarded as crown or public land for prospecting, but I would suggest you go to your local map shop and pick out a few good maps of gold workings in the particular area your interested in prospecting in.I always use and go by 1:25000 topographic maps after sussing out and reading up on an areas gold history. There are many good gold books out there today such as James Flett,Dough Stone etc.Which offer good info of a towns gold history and where, how and the type of gold that was found there.
As for whereabouts exactly and is it worth going over?, well, that strictly depends on how far you're prepared to go in tracking down your prey.

Re: Ararat and stawell
No Flora and Fauna reserve is available for prospecting in Vic. but you do need to know exactly where the boundaries are !

Re: Ararat and stawell
Anyone know a good spot around Stawell that would be good for metal detecting, looking at the map the Deep lead flora and fauna reserve could be good but as the poster above said its not allowed, anyone know another good spot on public land.

Re: Ararat and stawell
Hi Hotrock, there are a great many places you can detect around Ararat, Deep Lead, Londonderry and Stawell. Most of them can be found on my CD, "Ararat Gold". There are several gold field maps, GPS waypoints and Google Earth images and links as well as a great deal of advice.
You can get a CD through The Coiltek Gold Centre, SA Miners Den. Cost is around $30 but if you aren't near any of those places PM me on this site.
Cheers, Jim

try having a look on geovic.
You can add different layers to the map including gold producing areas and crown land. This enables you to view areas worth a detect anywhere in Victoria.
