How to make a simple hose joiner for under a dollar.
How to make a simple hose joiner for under a dollar.
Here is a simple hose joint that can be made out in the field if need be or at home. You can always bet somewhere along the line you will experience trouble with your hose connectors. And you can bet it will happen on an extended trip where the possibility of getting a replacement is next to nil. But you can always get a bit of PVC pipe without much trouble. This is a simple tip which may save you a lot of pain. cheers
What you will need is two pieces of 40 mm pipe for 1 ½ hose around 4 inches long. And one beer bottle {you must drink the beer first}.
1
You then heat up one end of the pipe and slide it over the bottle as shown.
2
You then insert the other bit of pipe into the heated one and work it till the heated pipe cools.
3
You then need to make a locking slot as shown in photos.
4
5
You then mark the centre of the T cut so you can place a locking screw
6
7
When you join the two pipes all you need do to lock them is to give them a twist.

Re: How to make a simple hose joiner for under a dollar.
I haven't seen those pics for a long time James and they are as relevant today as they as they were years ago !! I have ,since you told me years ago ,"always carry bits of pvc with ya" and how true as I have helped a few people on my trips who have lost or broken a joiner -- The last guy I helped was so impressed that I saved his weekend bought me a meal at the local hotel and I couldn't buy a beer either !!! it was a little embarrassing to say the least !! enough payment was the look on his face when I fixed his problem, that indeed was priceless

I always carry half a dozen spare 4" lengths of 38mm Galv pipe which I cut from Antenna masting pipe.
It is quite thin at around 1.2mm {much thinner than PVC pipe} and therefore creates very little resistance to the water flow. Also unbreakable.
Simply slip the hose over each end tighten the clamps and away we go.
Other than a couple of hoses which have Nut & Tail fittings this is all I use for joining my 1 1/2" hoses.
For 1" hose I use a similar set up but with off cuts of copper pipe.

Yes that would work well until it was time to roll them up! it’s a bugger undoing clamps extra a real pian indeed. 20 mm pvc pipe fit’s the one inch hose spot on.

Each to his own. It only takes a matter of 20 seconds to undo a clamp, slide it back and tighten so it don't get lost.

Re: How to make a simple hose joiner for under a dollar.
How true is that statement. But if you are joining more than one length it takes a bit long than 20 seconds. And the wear on the clamps I mean once grit gets into a thread we all been there. But as you say each to his own.

Re: How to make a simple hose joiner for under a dollar.
G'day all,
In the past I have used specially made double barbed connectors, specifically made to connect lay flat hoses. Over here, they are usually available in farming country and I find that I can obtain them locally both where I mine and where I live in the winter. The reason that I switched to barbed connectors is that I found that steel, or plastic, straight pipe pieces pull apart at awkard times (under the water pressures and workloads that I use).
The fact of the matter though, is that the connectors have to be stored where I can find them ( harder as the years go by ) and then there is that problem of finding those hose clamps of the right size as well.
Here is a simple (and relatively expensive) lifetime tool that might be of interest to you gents. I have been considering buying the clever little tool (or even making something similar for my own use) to keep in my OMG tool box.
http://www.clamptitetools.com/
As you can see using only wire (of different strengths and diameters) you can tightly clamp a wide range of hoses and other 'things'. Simple to use, only requires wire and a wire cutter, any size application and, with multiple wraps, able to handle difficult and hard to hold situations. Just the thing when the radiator clamp on the truck or hose connector just says "No! I've had it! NOW, what are you going to do?".

Thanks CD mate. This setup was designed for a quick fix which will enable a prospector to lay his hose out or to roll his hose up quickly. There have been times in the past where the need arose to cut a bad section out of a length of lay flat, due to vehicles driving over the hose. Yes the idea works and works well. As for use as a regular joiner they work ok. But Cam locks are the best to use in gritty areas more so when you have a lot of hose to run out. KA mate that tools looks pretty good indeed.

G'day James, How you been mate?? Long time between drinkls. You may remember years ago when I put these pics up on the "old" forum with my twist fit fitting for the pressure hose into the "banjos" spray bars. Wasnt going to blow off with this connection
Same "banjo" being used with a 2" suction nozzle set up going in to it.
Result 16 grams

All the best & Happy hunting

Jeeess James.....you been on the piss....LOL That is what I started my post with. Using this connection on my spray bar connection on the Banjo.
Hows your golding been coming along? I have had issues lately with our Enviromental out fit. Some tosser pimped on me & got me in the 5hit for using my 4" dredge. I arent even supposed to be using a sluice box or even fossicking for gold at all, not even panning but you cant keep the fever at bay. I went out a couple of weekends ago with my little flared sluice box I knocked up. The little creek has bugger all water so I taped some builders polythene to the inlet edge of the flare so that when I dammed the little creek I could bury the plastic in amongst the clay & stuff I built the dam with & so get a water tight seal so all the water was going down the box with no water leaking out under the box or around the edges.
Got 3.5 grams with a little specimen piece as well. I dear not use a motor & pump at the moment. I am working on a bilge pump powered mini crevice sucker set up. Nice & quiet. Stealth being the order of the day. Has to be better than my hand suction crevicing pumps once down on bed rock. Early trials look promising but I have a few issues to over come with it. Will keep this site posted as to how it pans out.

Ho mate it’s that time of night … a few quite ones grin. I heard about what happened man what can I say, I feel for you indeed I do. That is a top idea with the sluice I been looking at spot of late where that setup you have will work just great. The gold for me has been strong but all the rain has slowed me down heaps, I even got cabin fever bugger, but I have been working on that over the last few weeks. It’s almost time to get back out there full time and mate am I looking forward to it.
cheers

Good on you James. Yer you guys have had your share of the wet stuff that is for sure. Thanks for the sympothy re my Enviromental issues. SUCKS that is for sure. The cock that dobbed me in is a dole bluddging, lousy, loafing, useless, lowdown, good for nothing @#%$ toss pot that has nothing better to do with his time than stick his nose into other peoples business. May his earholes turn to arseholes & 5hit all over his shoulders & his balls bung up & fester, mortify & burst & may the drippings from his dick drip drip drip & rot his shoe laces.
Take care mate. Im going to hit the sack. We are a couple of hours ahead of you guys.
All the best.
